Another Five Star Reds Performance Ties Up Another Unbeaten Pre-Season

Barnsley hit their opponents for five for the second time in three games to ensure they completed a third year without losing a pre-season friendly.

A storming first half performance which also included a goal from a familiar face from the past saw The Reds lead Scunthorpe 5-0 at the break at Glanford Park. Its difficult to pick which was more startling- Barnsley 5-0 up at half-time/ Barnsley actually won at bogey ground Glanford Park/ Kyel Reid was in the team.

As Reds fans will remember, Reid enjoyed a decent loan spell at Oakwell from West Ham in the 2006-2007 season, scoring twice in 27 appearances, with 14 of those games coming off the bench. Some Barnsley supporters will also remember the 23 year old scoring the goal at Oakwell, for Wolves that earned them the Championship title in 2009. And now it seems he is trying to resurrect his career back in South Yorkshire after leaving Charlton this summer.

He certainly made a good impression, scoring the third goal in a one-sided contest. The Reds took the lead after just eight minutes when another trialist Ricardo Vaz Te scored his second goal for the club. Seven minutes later Craig Davies doubled the lead when he turned home Vaz Te’s cross from five yards. It was three just five minutes later as Reid scored a fantastic goal, turning his marker with a swivel and then firing home from 15 yards. The game had turned into a rout by the 33rd minute when Davies grabbed his second and The Reds fourth, with Nathan Doyle completing the scoring in the 44th minute.

Elsewhere on the day, 18 year old, Lithuanian Under 19 international goalkeeper Lukas Lidakevicius got his first taste of first team action when he replaced David Preece in the 80th minute. And there were familiar faces in the Iron line-up as former Reds skipper Paul Reid and midfielder Sam Togwell played for the League One outfit.

Barnsley team: Preece (Lidakevicius 80), Hassell, McEveley, Doyle, O'Brien (Digby 66), Davies (Rose 66), Wiseman, McNulty, Lovre, Vaz Te, K. Reid. Subs: Edwards, Foster, Haynes, Perkins, Addison

Meanwhile Barnsley also announced their official squad numbers for the 2011-2012 season. Amongst the new recruits, Davies gained the number nine shirt; David Perkins will wear 11, Rob Edwards four, Matty Done 10, Scott Wiseman 14, Jim McNulty 15 and loanee Miles Addison 17.
