Bristol Rovers assistant manager Marcus Stewart said:

The result was more important than the performance.

“The number of times we have played Wimbledon in the last six years and I can’t remember one fluid game so we knew what to expect and it wasn’t going to be a fluid football game with two teams in possession, a tactical sort of game, but a physical one.

“We just had to try and impose our match winners on them but for the first 20 minutes it was all them really with a few saves and then they hit the post and we were getting a bit over-run physically.

“If I was their manager I would have said can you get a goal the first 15-20 minutes, can you over-run them because they are on the back foot at home.

“His tactics worked but we saw it out, defended well, the goalie has made some good saves and we rode our luck, which you need, and I think off the back of that we got our game going and had a pretty good 15 minutes at the end of the first half.
