Chesterfield 2 Barnsley 2 - Reds fail to hold Spireites late charge

The Reds threw two points away for the second time in three games in an abject performance form two poor sides. The Reds somehow led 2-0 at the break thanks to two close range finishes from Michael Boulding but an early second half goal from Caleb Folan and a late freekick from Shane Nicolson ensured the Reds once again snatched a draw from the jaws of victory.

The Reds failed to get a foothold in the first half with Chesterfield enjoying most of the possession but creating little the best chance thought fell to the Reds with Boulding seeing a tame effort from a good position palmed away by Spireites keeper Carl Muggleton who was barracked about his weight throughout the first half from the traveling fans behind the goal.

Boulding then saw another go narrowly wide before he finally put the Reds ahead after 38mins the ball was played through to the former Grimsby ace by Jacob Burns and this time he couldn't fail to slip the ball under Muggleton to make it 1-0.

He then sent Barnsley into the break 2 up in first half stoppage time when he turned in space before rifling home.

Two to the good though undeserved surely they wouldn't throw it away again??

Oh yes just 4 minutes into the second half Chesterfield found their way back into the game when a fierce shot deflected off Kay straight into the path of substitute Caleb Folan he produced a smart finish dinking the ball over the onrushing Ross Turnbull.

Chesterfield then proceeded to batter the Barnsley goal with no luck as the wind made kicking extremely difficult.

The Spireites though were handed their equalizer by referee Mike Dean who had a poor game. With 2 minutes remaining he awarded Chesterfield a free-kick 18 yards out for a challenge that is laughable to say the least to be called a foul and Shane Nicholson did it justice by curling a beauty over the fully stretched Turnbull and into the far corner as Saltergate erupted.

Dean was booed off by Barnsley fans at full time but nothing can disguise the fact that this was a game the Reds had in the bag but once again let slip away.

The team have now picked up exactly 2 points a game since Hart stated that amount would secure a play-off place so there's no need 2 panic just yet but if 2 and 3 goal leads continue to be thrown away our chance of a trip to Cardiff look extremely bleak.
