Barnsley’s injury crisis shows no sign of easing ahead of the Easter Monday battle with bottom side Peterborough. Daniel Bogdanovic, Filipe Teixeira and Bobby Hassell remained sidelined whilst Emil Hallfredsson is now a doubt after limping off in the goal less draw with Sheffield United at the weekend. Ryan Shotton serves the final game of his two match suspension. Luke Steele, who was a trainee at Peterborough, is in line for his 100th career league appearance- 59 of them for Barnsley.

Head To Head
Barnsley are looking for their third double of the season after defeating Peterborough 2-1 at London Road back in October. Strikes from Daniel Bogdanovic and Jon Macken cancelled out a George Boyd penalty to kick start that brilliant eight match unbeaten run at the end of 2009. It was The Reds fourth successive win at London Road and Barnsley are somewhat of a bogey side for Peterborough. The Posh have lost four of their last five meetings with the Reds and six of the last eight.
The Reds enjoyed a double over Posh the last season they met- 2004-2005. Barnsley triumphed 4-0 at Oakwell in December 2004 with Michael Chopra grabbing a hat trick and Chris Shuker also on target, before winning the return game 3-1 in March 2005 in Andy Ritchie’s first game in caretaker charge. It was an epic game too. A Chopra penalty had given the Reds the advantage but Andy Legg looked to have earned Posh a point in the 73rd minute. The Reds had other ideas however as Daniel Nardiello (89) and Shuker (90) snatched a late win.

The home record isn’t as impressive as at London Road however and Barnsley have lost two of the last three home meetings and overall only just lead six to five on wins against the Posh at Oakwell.
Aside from the Chopra inspired 4-0 thumping, Peterborough won 1-0 at Oakwell in 2003-2004 to deal a major blow to the Reds League One play-off hopes as Calum Willock bagged the only goal a minute in the second half. This enabled Posh to gain revenge for the 3-2 home defeat they had suffered in October 2003, whilst in the previous season, 2002-2003, Peterborough took the spoils in a 2-1 victory in April 2003. Bruce Dyer had given Barnsley a half time lead from the penalty spot but a Mark Arber penalty and Lee Crooks own goal swung the game in Posh’s favour- that result left Barnsley in 19th position in Division Two and once again enabled Posh to gain revenge for a home defeat to the Reds, 3-1 in November 2002.
Barnsley were victorious at home the last time the two sides met at Oakwell at this level however. In 1993-1994 they won 1-0 thanks to an Andy Payton goal. That was amazingly the fourth time the two sides had met in four months at the start of that season. Peterborough had won a league encounter at London Road 4-1 in August, before two legs of a League Cup tie in September and October eventually went Posh’s way 4-2 on aggregate. The two sides drew 1-1 at Oakwell and Posh won 3-1 at London Road.

This Season
After two successive promotions, Peterborough have found the Championship a step too far, and anything less than victory tomorrow will confirm their relegation back to League One. Indeed they could still be relegated if they win, if other results conspire against them.
It has been a season of turmoil at London Road for a side that stormed League Two and One under Darren Ferguson but have never got to grips with the Championship. Ferguson was fired in November with the side bottom having gained just two wins from the first 16 games. Unfortunately they have never moved from that position. Mark Cooper who had led Kettering to second in the Blue Square Premier, took over but he couldn’t revive the Posh’s fortunes and was dismissed less than three months later having won just one of 13 games in charge and the club 11 points off safety.
So on the 2nd February 2010, Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony turned to former Motherwell and Stockport manager Jim Gannon to restore some pride in a wretched season and he has managed to win more matches than Ferguson and Cooper put together. The 41 year old who will stand down at the end of the season to make way for Gary Johnson has won four of his 13 games in charge, losing nine. The last of those victories came back on the 13th March when they secured their first away win of the season- defeating Watford 1-0 and since then they have lost five games in a row for the first time at this level and have scored just twice in that run- both of them in the narrow 3-2 home defeat to Newcastle at the weekend.
Barnsley’s recent record is not much better as they too have failed to win any of their last five games, losing three and drawing two. It is the first time they have gone five games without victory under Mark Robins. The Reds have also gone three games without scoring for the second time this season. The last time they went four without a goal was in September 2008 when they recorded five blanks and the last time they went six without winning was at the start of this campaign when they failed to win any of their first six matches. Indeed Barnsley have recorded just one win in their last eight matches- 2-1 against Nottingham Forest.
Overall playing record for 5th April:
Peterborough:
Peterborough have won four and lost four of their 11 matches on the 5th April but haven’t won any of their last four. Their last victory on this date was a 3-1 home success over Bournemouth in 1997. Simon Clark, Miquel De Souza and Ricky Otto got the goals. The Posh have drawn the last three on the 5th April, 1-1 with Swindon in 2003, 2-2 at Hartlepool in 2005 and 2-2 at Wycombe in 2008.
Barnsley have a slightly poor record on the 5th April having won eight and lost 11 of their 21 games. The Reds have lost four of the last five since a 2-0 win over Reading in 1975. Since then they have lost 1-0 to Grimsby in 1980, 1-0 at Birmingham in 1997, 1-0 at Port Vale in 1999 and 2-1 at Oldham in 2003. They stopped the rot in their most recent 5th April game when they drew 2-2 with Wrexham in 2005. Daniel Nardiello and Michael Chopra got the Barnsley goals.
Peterborough: Played 11, Won 4, Drawn 3, Lost 4, Scored 18, Conceded 21
Barnsley: Played 21, Won 8, Drawn 2, Lost 11, Scored 29, Conceded 29
Incidentally Barnsley have won nine and lost 10 of their 24 Easter Monday fixtures but have lost just one of the last five. They were defeated 3-1 at home to Swansea on Easter Monday last year but gained a superb 1-0 home win over Birmingham in 2007 that went a long way to securing Championship safety.
