Paul Hayes is set for a startling return to Scunthorpe United in a move that mirrors his arrival at Oakwell two years ago.
Back in the summer of 2005 after helping Scunthorpe win promotion from League Two, Hayes left for Oakwell in a deal that eventually cost Barnsley £150,000 after Hayes' contract had run out and with him being under the age of 24 the fee was set by a tribunal.
Now two years on, Hayes is out of contract at Oakwell and is set to return to Glanford Park after the Iron's promotion from League One with a tribunal again likely to get involved.
Reports suggest The Reds are looking for £200,000 for Hayes which Scunthorpe are refusing to pay. Barnsley believe that Hayes has grown from a League Two player into a Championship player during his time at Oakwell and the club should be compensated accordingly.
Nothing has been heard from Simon Davey, but Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins told the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph:
"I am really excited about the prospect of Paul coming back,"
"There is a suggestion that he's a bit lazy but I know he is a very, very good player with an eye for goal. I know he is also very hungry and ambitious."
Hayes will sign a three year deal at Glanford Park as Scunthorpe embark on their first campaign in the second tier of English football in 43 years.
Hayes scored 18 goals in 87 appearances for Barnsley including 2 against Scunthorpe. He also scored 2 crucial goals in the 2005-2006 Play-Offs and a penalty in the shootout Final win over Swansea.
