Shrewsbury manager John Askey said:

“The players gave everything they had,”

“Most of the game I feel like we competed well with Sunderland. We limited them to very few chances.

“Obviously, I’m disappointed with the goals we gave away – because I don’t think they had done much up until that point.

“To concede from an own goal is a bit of a kick in the teeth really. We had stopped them from playing.

“In the final third we just needed that little bit of extra quality at times – when we were breaking through with that final pass or shot that.

“Overall I was pleased at how we performed. We worked hard and stopped them from playing.”
