Statement from Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council on Peter Doyle's position

Last updated : 15 January 2003 By Mad Tyke

In response to a great deal of public comment and speculation, the Council wishes to clarify that it has no involvement in the running of Barnsley Football Club.

The position fulfilled by Mr (Councillor) Peter Doyle as Mayor of the Borough is quite separate and distinct from his role and responsibilities in his private business activities, including his position as the new owner of the football club.

The Council believes the retention of a Football League Club in the town is important for both the social and economic well being of the town. The Club is an integral part of our community and the Council will continue to support the Club wherever that is appropriate and within its capabilities, bearing in mind the Council’s responsibilities to the whole community.

However, the Council has no involvement with the finances or the business decisions of the Club. With regard to the Council’s planning procedures, as with all planning applications, any received from the Club will be dealt with entirely in the best interests of the community, with due probity and within proper legal frameworks
