Stockport County 2-2 Barnsley: Last minute agony for the Tykes......again

Last updated : 22 January 2005 By Mad Tyke

Barnsley once again threw 2 points away in the last minute after an inept and mediocre performance at Edgeley Park. Two mistakes by goalkeeper Nick Colgan gifted the struggling Hatters a much needed point.

Barnsley seemed to struggle on the severely cut up pitch and were reduced to hitting long balls up to Boulding and Chopra which were meat and drink for the Stockport backline.

So it was no surprise when the Hatters took the lead after just 5 minutes but thanks to some comical defending. A harmless ball was seemingly set to be dealt with by skipper Tony Vaughan ( who had another impressive game) until Colgan decided to come charging out. Vaughan and Colgan ensured to get in a tangle with the ball falling to Keith Briggs and despite the desperate lunge from Tom Williams the no. 15 found the empty net.

The strong traveling support hoped this would spur the Reds on but it was Stockport who stayed on top with Colgan missing a cross and then blocking with his legs.

But against the run of play the Reds found themselves level after 31mins a lovely ball was played through for Boulding to race onto and although the ball seemed to get stuck between his legs he managed to slip it under the onrushing Spencer and bring Barnsley level.

Stockport came quickly out of the blocks in the second half and spurned a host of chances the best being when Colgan parried a Williams shot across his line before jumping on the ball before he could creep in.

But Reds fans were shocked for a second time when thier team went 2-1 with their first attack of the second half in the 63rd min. Burns swung in a corner that was only cleared as far as Vaughan on the edge of the area. His first shot was charged down but he notched his third goal against the Hatters this season on the rebound hitting an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

That should have been that as Stockport enjoyed the lions share of possession for the remaining 27mins but created little.

That was until the last 50 seconds of normal time. A long ball was floated in and seemed to hit Bobby Hassell on the arm the appeals were turned down but to ensure Stockport got the penalty Colgan pulled down Feeney who was on the byline with his back to goal and at an angle that seemed impossible to score from.

The drama wasn't over there though as Reds fans were put through every emotion.

First Warren Feeney stepped up and sent Colgan the wrong way. Ref M Warren though ordered a retake due to encroachment.

Feeney stepped up again and saw his kick saved by Colgan but for the 2nd game in a row and the 3rd this season Colgan was adjudged to have moved too early and yet another retake was ordered.

This time Feeney stepped up and although Colgan went the right way he couldn't keep it out.

The Board went up to declare 4 mins of added time and sub Mark Stallard scooped the ball over from close range but the Reds were left to rue another 2 points thrown away.

The same lessons though are not being learned the Reds don't seem to understand a match lasts for 90mins and Nick Colgan doesn't seem to understand that he has to stay on his line until the kick is taken.

These are lessons that if aren't learned soon mid-table is all we can hope for again.
