AFC Wimbledon 1-4 Barnsley

Last updated : 22 January 2019 By Rob Miles

Barnsley made it back-back league wins for the fifth time this season with a thumping victory at bottom side AFC Wimbledon.

It was Barnsley's seventh away victory of the season, from just 14 played (50%)

Barnsley opened the scoring away from home in the league for the sixth time this season, and this is the first occasion that they have not kept a clean sheet in this situation.

The Reds went on to score four on the road (all comps) for the fourth time this season, their best tally since the 1946-1947 season.

Home and away they have netted four goals on six occasions for the first time since 1999-2000 (also 6)

The Reds are now unbeaten in seven league outings (5 wins) - their joint best unbeaten run of the season having also being unbeaten in their first seven matches (4 wins)

This was the ninth Barnsley league game to be level at half time this season but only the second of those not to be goal-less (also 1-1 home draw with Plymouth)

There were four different scorers in a Barnsley league game for the first time since October 2017 (4-2 win at Burton - Lloyd Isgrove, Brad Potts, Joe Williams, Harvey Barnes)

Barnsley scored three second half league goals for the first time since scoring four in September 2016 at Wolves.

Cauley Woodrow has now scored in seven games for Barnsley (total of 8 goals) in all competitions, the Reds are unbeaten in those seven (W5 D2) and have gone on to net four goals in three of them.

He has also scored Barnsley's first goal in five of those seven matches.

Kieffer Moore scored his 13th League One goal of the season, the same amount he managed for Rotherham last season before his January switch to Oakwell.

He has 15 goals in 27 appearances overall this season and only once has he not netted in back to back matches with his strike at Fleetwood in September being followed by a five game drought.

Moore and Mamadou Thiam both scored and assisted in this game, the 11th and 12th times this season that a Reds player has both scored and assisted in the same match (all comps)

Alex Mowatt contributed his 12th assist of the season including three in his last two appearances.

Barnsley have gone unbeaten in their first three league games of a calendar year for the first time since 2016 when they actually won their first six league games of that year.

Barnsley have opened the scoring 16 times in 26 League One matches this season and remain unbeaten when this has occurred (W14 D2)

Barnsley have dropped only four points from winning positions this season, only Southend (3) and Luton (2) have dropped fewer.

This was the 11th time Barnsley have scored in both halves of a league game this season, the most in a single campaign since 2016-2017 (12)

This result ended Wimbledon's five match unbeaten home run stretching back to November.

Kenny Dougall had to replace the injured Cauley Woodrow after 42 minutes, the first time Barnsley have been forced into a first half change since Dougall himself was replaced, in the 21st minute at Shrewsbury back in October.

Barnsley enjoyed the majority of the ball possession (53%) - for the 34th time this season

Barnsley had 18 shots at goal, their most in an away game since Scunthorpe in August (25)

Eleven of those were on target, the most by Barnsley in any league match home or away since the opening day against Oxford (12)

Wimbledon manager Wally Downes said:

“They shouldn’t be down. We said that we would go head to head with Barnsley today. We had three games away from home when we played a little bit conservatively. We had tried to get a result at Fleetwood by hook or by crook as it was just about being in the hat for the next round.

Against Portsmouth and Coventry we were sort of restricted by injuries with how we had to play. Today, we had enough bodies to play like I’d like to play.

For an hour we went head to head with them to see where we are at. For that spell, I was more than happy with them as I thought we gave them a good game.
