Barnsley survived a nervy finish to secure their first win of the season at home to bookies favourites Bristol City.

Former Manchester City winger Chris Shuker, manager Paul Hart's first signing at Oakwell, was the hero with both second-half goals.

City pulled one back two minutes from time through lively striker Leroy Lita but Barnsley hung on to follow up their opening day draw at MK Dons with a moral boosting victory in front of their home supporters.

It was a highly entertaining open game, with the pitch standing up really well considering the heavy rain that had poured down in south Yorkshire over the last couple of days.

Target man Barry Conlon started brightly for Barnsley and he was involved in the first opening on 13 minutes, combining with Bobby Hassell to create a chance for Shuker but his low drive was well blocked by keeper Steve Phillips.

The visitors then enjoyed a good 15 minute spell of play and both Lita and defender Craig Woodman went close, before new signing Paul Heffernan spurned a great chance on 29 minutes, heading wide from 12 yards.

The second half was evenly contested but Barnsley gradually managed to hold the upper hand and in the 69th minute committed midfield work from the home grown Nicky Wroe created a chance for Shuker just inside the box and he gave Steve Phillips no chance with the low drive.

14 minutes from time Shuker did the trick again, converting Stephen McPhail's pull back from the line, and although Lita took advantage of some sloppy defending to score two minutes from time, Barnsley held on to register their first victory in front of their home fans.
