Barnsley captain Paul Reid booked his side's passage into the second round of the Carling Cup by crashing home a 77th minute winner against League Two Darlington.

The Championship outfit were made to work hard for their victory, but Reid put a shocking display at the weekend firmly behind him by becoming the match winner.

Twelve minutes from time he collected a low corner from Dominik Werling, took a touch and then lashed the ball right-footed beyond Darlington's stand-in keeper David Stockdale.

Barnsley had earlier broken the deadlock in the 65th minute following a flowing move down the right.

Former Sheffield United man Rob Kozluk collected a pass from Nigerian born striker Kayode Odejayi before galloping down the flank and delivering a pin-point cross for Hungarian substitute Istvan Ferenczi to head in from eight yards.

But Darlington dug deep and levelled just four minutes later.

Kevin McBride was given too much space on the right to put in a low cross and former Barnsley striker Tommy Wright finished in superb fashion rifling the ball beyond home debutant Heinz Muller.

But Barnsley held on thanks to Reid's effort and they could have added to their tally in the 90th minute when a lovely throughball from their star midfielder Brian Howard should have presented Odejayi with a clear route to goal.

But the powerful frontman hesitated just inside the box and was forced wide before seeing his effort blocked.

The first half had been extremely low-key and Barnsley's passing inside the opening 15 minutes left a lot to be desired.

The closest either side came in the first hour was a Darlington free-kick seven minutes after the break.

Chris Palmer's in-swinging set piece was met by the diving Steve Foster but the header was smartly saved by Muller who made an assured debut.
