Barnsley's two year stay in the Championship is over following a 4-1 defeat at Derby County. They needed to at least match Bolton and Burton's results to secure survival but even though Burton succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at Preston, Bolton scored twice in the final five minutes to defeat Nottingham Forest 3-2 and survive. In the end Barnsley were ONE Forest goal off surviving.
A two year stay in a division following promotion is the shortest spell for Barnsley since lasting just one season in the Premier League in 1998 - it is their shortest ever within the Football League.
This result also saw the contracts of coaching team Jose Morais, Dimas Teixeira and Joao Cunhã terminated due to a relegation clause. It means Morais has officially had the shortest reign EVER for a permanent Barnsley manager. The Portuguese won only three of his 15 games in charge (20%) the LOWEST of any permanent Barnsley manager ever!
Morais is the first Barnsley manager to leave his position at the end of a season since Mark Robins in 2009, indeed the last four managers (permanent and caretaker) had all left their posts in a February.
Barnsley end the season third bottom - their highest position when relegated since finishing third bottom of the Third Division in 1972.
Each of their last three relegations, 2014, 2002 and 1998 saw them finish second bottom.
However despite this Barnsley managed only two more points this time around than they did in 2014. They have though scored more goals this time (48 compared to 44) and conceded less (72 compared to 77)
The defeat at Derby was the Reds' 23rd Championship defeat of the season, meaning they lost exactly half their matches, only Burton (25) lost more.
They won only nine matches (only Sunderland 7) won less, they drew 14, their most in a season since 2010-2011 (also 14).
George Moncur's curling effort was Barnsley's 48th Championship goal, only Burton (38), Birmingham (38) and Bolton (39) scored less.
This defeat was also Barnsley's heaviest of the season and the only occasion they conceded four times in the Championship, however their total of 72 goals conceded was only better than Bolton (74), Sunderland (80) and Burton (81)
Barnsley finished above Wolves on goal difference in 2016-17, but will now be playing two divisions below them in August.
Remarkably only conceding 4+ once in a Championship season is their best record since 2008-2009 when it also only happened once (0-4 at Norwich)
Barnsley went the entire season without winning when conceding the first goal (the last time they overturned such a deficit was against Leeds in January 2017) - it is the first time they have gone an entire season without winning when conceding first since the last relegation season of 2013-2014.
Barnsley's results against Derby this season were their worst aggregate score against a single opponent (1-7) following the 3-0 reverse at Oakwell.
Matej Vydra and Tom Lawrence became the fifth and sixth player to score against Barnsley in both league meetings in 2017-2018 following Ezgjan Alioski (Leeds) Cardiff's Callum Paterson, Millwall's Lee Gregory and Bristol City's Famara Diedhiou.
Indeed Lawrence has scored in each of his last three appearances against the Reds after netting for Ipswich in March 2017.
Vydra and David Nugent's goals came as substitutes, a substitute has scored against the Reds in three of the last five matches (also Bolton's Craig Noone and Forest's Apostolos Vellios)
It is the first time two subs have scored against Barnsley in the same game since Wolves' Bright Enobakhare and Alfred N'Diaye did so in September.
Barnsley finished the season with two wins in 13 and lost each of their last six away games - their longest losing away run since a run of seven between November 2014 and February 2015.
Barnsley conceded three second half goals for the second time this season (also v Fulham in January)
At least Barnsley had the last word- scoring the last goal of the 2017-2018, something they have done in four of the last five seasons, the exception being at Newcastle last season.
Barnsley lost the first and last game of the season for the second successive season, something they have done in each of their last three Championship seasons, conceding four in at least one of those per season.
Barnsley have now been relegated three times in a year ending in 8 (1938, 1998, 2018)
Each of their last FIVE relegations have also occurred in an international tournament year (prior to Euro 1972, France 98, Japan & South Korea 2002, Brazil 2014 and now Russia 2018)
Barnsley have now been relegated to the third tier three times in the last 16 years, prior to this they had not been that low for 21 years.
This is the first time Barnsley have been confirmed as relegated on the final day since 1972, each of their previous three relegations were sealed with a game to spare and indeed Barnsley have survived two final day situations recently, in 2013 and 2009.
Barnsley have been relegated after finishing 14th the previous season, the biggest fall from grace since Charlton went down in 2015-2016 after finishing 12th in 2014-2015.
Barnsley have now won only one of their last 16 trips to Derby (W1 D4 L11) and have lost each of the past four.
This was the first time Derby won their final regular match of a league season since 2012-13.
Cameron Jerome opened the scoring, meaning he has scored in three successive games for the first time since October 2016.
Barnsley and Burton join Sunderland in League One next season, the first time two clubs with the same first letter have been relegated from this league since 2010-2011 when Sheffield United and Scunthorpe went down.
Incredibly a team whose name begins with B has been relegated in each of the past six seasons - Barnsley and Burton 2018,Blackburn 2017, Bolton 2016, Blackpool 2015, Barnsley 2014, Bristol City 2013.
Barnsley finish on 41 points, the second highest amount that they have ever been relegated with, back in 2002 they exited the second tier despite accruing 48.

Derby manager Gary Rowett said:
"If you had asked me about the play-offs about eight or nine games ago I would have said, even if we get in, we're not going to have enough momentum or form to really challenge, although we know they are unpredictable.
"What I would say now is, after the last four games, we have performed really well in different ways in all of them. You can see with the players when they train there's a bit of extra zip and a bit of extra belief.
"As we know sometimes, you can change the formation but it's about affecting the players' psychology and that's what the last four games have done. They will be going into these next games full of determination and we've almost been given a second chance.
"All the sides in there are good sides and have good quality, us included, and are more then capable of winning the play-offs - and I don't think form is going to have that much bearing on what happens now."
