Middlesbrough 3-1 Barnsley

Last updated : 12 March 2018 By Rob Miles

Barnsley have conceded a goal in the first minute of a game for the second time in Jose Morais first five games in charge - as many as in the last 183 games combined.

The last five occasions Barnsley have conceded in the first minute have occurred in 2018, 2018, 2014, 2011 and 2002 - The Reds have gone on to lose three, draw one and win one of those games.

It is the first time Barnsley have conceded in the first minute of a match twice in a season since 2000-2001 when Clinton Morrison's first minute strike was enough for a 1-0 Crystal Palace win in September 2000 and then in March 2001, despite Scott Taylor netting in the first minute for Tranmere, the Reds eventually won 3-2 at Prenton Park.

Barnsley went 2-0 down for the second successive game - the first time this has happened since November against Leeds and Reading.

Indeed Barnsley were two goals behind after just 18 minutes, the earliest they have fallen two goals down since the 20th January when they were two behind after just seven minutes.

Kieffer Moore scored Barnsley's consolation goal - each of Barnsley's last seven goals have been scored by either Moore or McBurnie (5 for McBurnie, 2 for Moore)

Barnsley have now only scored twice in a match on two occasions in 23 outings, both coming against Birmingham.

Jose Morais has won only one of his first five games in charge, losing three, he is the first Reds boss to lose three of his first five games since Danny Wilson in 2013.

However one of Wilson's defeats was in the FA Cup, meaning Morais is the first Reds manager to lose three of his first five league matches since Nigel Spackman in 2001 (Morais - W1 D1 L3, Spackman - W0 D2 L3)

Conceding in the first minute was always going to make it tough against Middlesbrough as the Teesiders have a remarkable record when going 1-0 up this season - they have now won all 16 Championship matches this season in which they have opened the scoring.

This was the first since February 1984 that Middlesbrough have won back-to-back home league matches against Barnsley, and therefore the first time at the Riverside. The record between 1984 and yesterday is: 0-0, 0-0, 2-0 Boro, 1-0 Barnsley, 1-0 Boro, 1-0 Barnsley, 5-0 Boro, 1-1, 2-1 boro, 1-1, 2-0 boro, 3-2 barnsley, 3-1 boro.

They have now lost back to back games at the Riverside by a 3-1 scoreline, the previous encounter, in 2014 sealed the Reds relegation to League One, this result leaves them two points above the drop zone.

Barnsley have never kept a clean sheet at the Riverside and are without one in their last nine trips to Middlesbrough in all competitions, conceding 19 goals in that time.

Patrick Bamford has been responsible for eight of Middlesbrough's last 11 Championship goals.

Barnsley have not won any of their 16 Championship matches against sides currently occupying the top 10 of the division (W0 D5 L11)

Barnsley conceded the first goal for the 21st time in 35 Championship games this season, the most since the relegation season of 2013-2014 when they conceded the first goal on 27 occasions.

Barnsley enjoyed 54% possession in the game, despite it being the sixth time they have enjoyed more possession away from home than their hosts this season, they have lost five and drawn one of those six games.

In total there were only 18 shots in the game (nine each) the joint lowest of the season for Barnsley - also 18 (nine each) against Cardiff in November.

Mamadou Thiam became the 18th half time substitution made by Barnsley this season.

Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray said:

"In the first half we did very well, passed it well, played through the pitch and put lots of crosses in. The one disappointment was that we never scored more goals.

"The third goal should have truthfully killed it but we took our foot off the pedal and that's one of the things we've been talking about. You can't do that at any level.

"The challenge is to stay in there now. As I've said, we can work all week but once they cross that line they take responsibility and it's up to the players. A lot of things are said about managers and coaches... but they have to take responsibility. In the next nine games we'll see."
