Wigan Athletic 0-0 Barnsley

Last updated : 01 September 2019 By Rob Miles

Barnsley ensured they went into the first international break of the season above the relegation zone by earning a goal-less draw against the side directly inside it.

The Reds go into the two week break in 21st place with five points, it is their lowest points tally at the first international break since 2013 (four points) and their lowest league position since 2009 when they were bottom with just one point.

This result did however put to an end Barnsley's eight match losing streak on the road in the Championship.

It was the Reds' first goal-less draw in 15 outings (all comps) last experiencing a blank in March at Doncaster.

It is their first Championship blank in 25 matches since Wolves at home in January 2018.

It is Barnsley's first 0-0 on the road in the Championship since December 2017 at Brentford.

Barnsley's first goal-less league draw has come in their sixth outing, the earliest it has arrived at this level since 2011-2012 when they drew 0-0 in their first match, at Nottingham Forest.

Wigan have now lost only one of their 11 previous Football League encounters with Barnsley (W6 D4 L1), losing 1-4 in May 2016.

Barnsley have won just three of their 15 previous matches against Wigan in all competitions (W3 D5 L7)

This was the third goal-less draw between the two clubs but the first not at Oakwell.

Indeed it Barnsley's first ever league clean sheet at Wigan.

This was Barnsley's first away clean sheet in the Championship in 10 matches since a 2-0 win at Birmingham in February 2018.

It was the only 0-0 in the Championship this weekend.

Brad Collins kept a clean sheet on his league debut, since the start of last season three goalkeepers have kept debut clean sheets for Barnsley - also Sami Radlinger and Jordan Smith.

Barnsley finish August with five points, their lowest for the season's first month since 2013-2014 (4 points)

Barnsley have gone six games without a win (all comps), their worst ever under Daniel Stendel. His previous longest winless streak was just three.

Barnsley had five players shown cards, their most in a match since a 2-2 draw at Oxford in January (also 5)

Barnsley had four defenders booked/sent off, they have had a defender booked in six of their seven matches this season (all comps) with Sheffield Wednesday being the exception.

Mads Andersen was one of those booked at Wigan which means that either he or Bambo Diaby has been booked in every game bar Hillsborough.

Mallik Wilks has now been booked in four of the first seven games of the season.

Ben Williams was given an injury time red card, the first time a Barnsley player has been shown a red card in the 90th minute or later since March 2015 when Milan Lalkovic was sent off in the 90th minute at Leyton Orient.

Dimitri Cavare, seemingly set to leave the club, returned for only his third appearance of the season - two of those games have been Barnsley's two clean sheets.

Barnsley have now gone five league games without a win (D2 L3), their worst run since March 2018- 6 games (D3 L3)

The Reds have now won just four of their past 26 games at Championship level (D8 L14).

In all competitions Barnsley have won only one of their first seven matches, their worst start to a season since 2013-2014 when they won only one of the first 13.

Barnsley have failed to score in their first three away league games of a season for the first time since 2001-2002.

Both sides had equal 50% ball possession in the game, the first time this has occurred in a Barnsley match since an FA Cup tie with Notts County in November. It is the first time in a league match since Bristol Rovers away in October 2018.

Wigan manager Paul Cook said:
"You can see what happens when the lads raise the level, the support comes instantly from the fans and we need to do that more often for them.

"Defensively we were very good. If you watched us last week at QPR, you wouldn't have said that, so you can see there's been some improvement from the training ground this week.

"We know we've got to be better going forward, we accept that. At times Barnsley played really well, they've got pace and energy in good areas and that's credit to them."
