Wycombe 1-3 Barnsley

Last updated : 18 March 2021 By Rob Miles

Barnsley’s incredible run continues as a ninth win in ten outings and a ninth away win of the Championship season saw them rise to fifth in the division, five points inside the play-offs and now only three points off fourth place.

This ninth success is their joint most away wins in the second tier in the club’s history after also winning nine in 1999-2000 and 2016-2017.

Only league leaders Norwich (13) have won more away Championship matches this season with Brentford and Swansea having also won nine.

This triumph was Barnsley’s fifth successive away league win, their best winning run on the road ever in the second tier and equals their best away winning run at any level first set between December 1938 and February 1939 (Accrington 2-0, Halifax 4-1, Barrow 2-1, Bradford 2-0 and Doncaster 3-1) in Division Three North and then equalled between March and April 1955 also in Division Three North (Tranmere 1-0, Hartlepool 3-0, Darlington 1-0, Bradford 2-0 and Crewe 2-1)

Barnsley have scored as many as three goals in three successive away games, equalling a club record set in March-April 1934 when they drew 4-4 at Doncaster, won 5-1 at Mansfield and 4-1 at Carlisle.

Barnsley scored in first half stoppage time for the first time this season however Daryl Dike’s goal to make it 2-0 after 49 minutes was the 15th goal scored in a Barnsley match between the 45th and 50th minutes this season (all comps)

His 81st minute sealer was the 14th goal scored by Barnsley in the 80th minute or later in all competitions this season.

Cauley Woodrow had given Barnsley the lead with a penalty in first half injury time – the third successive Barnsley/Wycombe meeting in which Woodrow has netted from the spot.

There have been now FIVE penalty goals in the last three meetings.

It was the 11th successive successful penalty taken by Woodrow for Barnsley, the second best penalty run by a Barnsley player, only surpassed by Ernie Hine who netted 12 successive penalties between 1922 and 1923.

Alex Mowatt received the second red card of his Barnsley career – his first came 151 appearances ago… on his debut in a 3-1 defeat to Wolves in January 2017.

This was Barnsley’s third red card of the season following the double sending offs of Michal Helik and Mads Andersen at Reading in September.

Barnsley won a game in which they have had a man sent off for the first time in four such matches - a 3-0 win at Southend after Jacob Brown was dismissed in League One in March 2019.

Dike is the second Barnsley player to net a brace this season following Michal Helik against Huddersfield on Boxing Day.

The American is the first Red to net an away brace since Woodrow at Fulham in February 2020.

Barnsley had two substitutes (Toby Sibbick and Carlton Morris) yellow carded for the first time since October 2018 at Shrewsbury (Ryan Hedges and Cameron McGeehan)

The Reds are unbeaten in six away league games (W5 D1) their best run since a run of nine in the 2018-2019 League One promotion season (W5 D4) but for the first time in the second tier since  the opening five away games of 2011-2012 and final away game of 2010-2011 (W1 D5)

This was Barnsley’s 23rd win of the season (19 league wins, 4 cup wins), their most in a second tier season since 1999-2000 (27)

Barnsley are unbeaten in 12 league matches (W9 D3) which is their best unbeaten second tier run since going 12 without defeat between December 2001 and February 2002 (W5 D7)

Barnsley are now unbeaten in their last 35 games (all comps) when opening the scoring (W31 D4) last losing when breaking the deadlock at Cardiff in December 2019.

Despite failing to win any of their first seven league matches of 2020-2021 only the division’s current top three have won more than Barnsley’s 19 so far this season.

Barnsley have scored 42 league goals under Valérien Ismaël, 24 of which have come in the second half (57%)

This was only the eighth meeting between Barnsley and Wycombe and the Reds have now won half with the Chairboys victorious on only one occasion. This was though only Barnsley’s second victory at Adams Park and first since October 2003.

Barnsley have now played the equivalent of a full Championship season behind closed doors (46 games) and have won 23 (half) collecting 79 points.

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth said:

"I've just said to my players that if they keep playing like that every game, we'll stay up because teams will not be able to handle that. I'm really proud of the boys. They were outstanding. The work-rate and the effort was just awesome.

"Barnsley are the form team in the league. Ismael is doing a brilliant job. But they've scored three goals and then they shut up shop when they went down to 10 men because, at 2-1, they're worried about their lead.

"At 3-1 they had that safety. There was a lot of appealing from the opposition bench and it went a bit crazy sometimes. The crowd would have loved that, though - it was a full-blooded battle with both teams going for it."
