Barnsley 0-1 Bromley

Last Updated : 16-Aug-2026 by Robert Miles

Barnsley’s poor league form from 2025-2026 has continued into the new campaign as the Reds lost their opening league game for the fourth time in seven years.

They have also now lost at Oakwell on the opening day twice in three years and three times in seven.

This was however Daniel Stendel’s first ever home League One defeat – having remained unbeaten in all 23 in 2018-2019 when he guided Barnsley to promotion.

He has though now failed to win any of his last 11 league games as Barnsley manager at any level (D3 L8) and , excluding shootouts any of his last 12 (D4 L8)

For Barnsley themselves they have won only one of their last seven League One outings, losing four of them.

They have now failed to win any of the last seven league games at Oakwell, losing three of the past four.

This is the first time Barnsley have lost their final league game of one season and the first of the next campaign since 2022 when they lost 4-0 at West Brom in their last Championship match to date in 2021-2022 and then lost 1-0 at Plymouth in the League One opener of 2022-2023.

This is the fourth time in the last 12 years Barnsley have suffered a 1-0 opening day defeat, also occurring in 2014-2015, 2020-2021 and 2022-2023.

These are also the only times in that run that the Reds have failed to score on the opening day.

This defeat was a result of a goal from ex Barnsley player Victor Adeboyejo on his Bromley league debut. The 28 year old striker who scored nine goals in 97 appearances for the Reds between 2017 and 2022 (of which four of those goals came under Daniel Stendel in 2018-2019) is the first ex Red to net against them since Elliot Lee for Doncaster at Oakwell on the 21st March.

Ironically it also means Adeboyejo has scored at Oakwell in both of Stendel’s first league games in charge of Barnsley having being on the scoresheet for the Reds on the opening day of 2018-2019 when they thumped Oxford 4-0.

This was Barnsley’s first ever meeting with Bromley in the Ravens first ever game at third tier level. The Reds have now failed to any of the last three home matches with the previous season’s League Two champions, having also lost 1-0 to Doncaster last season and drew 1-1 with Stockport the previous year.

There were 11,163 in attendance, the lowest Oakwell crowd for the first home league game of a season since 2022-2023 against Cheltenham (10,289)

Despite failing to score Barnsley had 22 shots at goal, their most in a game since also having 22 in a 2-2 home draw with Northampton on the 3rd February.

Only eight of those (36%) were on target but it is the most shots on target Barnsley have had in a league game since the 12th April 2025 against Bolton (9) a game Barnsley won 4-1.

Bromley also had 12 shots in total meaning there were 34 in the game, the most in a Barnsley match since the aforementioned Northampton game (35)

Barnsley also won 12 corners which is their most in a game since the 11th January 2025 at Bristol Rovers (14) and most at Oakwell since the 1st October 2024 against Wycombe.
