Doncaster Rovers 0-0 Barnsley

Last Updated : 23-Aug-2026 by Robert Miles

Barnsley are still searching for their first league goal of 2026-2027 but did earn their first point with only their second goal-less draw in 64 league outings.

This is the first time Barnsley have failed to score in their opening two league games of a season since 2020-2021 in the Championship when they didn’t net until the fourth outing and first time at this level since 1979-1980.

This is the first season Barnsley have failed to net a first half goal in their first three matches of a season (all competitions) since 2022-2023.

Barnsley are now one of only two League One sides yet to register a goal alongside AFC Wimbledon.

However the Reds have only conceded once in their opening two matches, only one of three League One teams with such a good record and only bettered by the league leaders Bradford who are yet to concede. It is their best defensive start to a season since 2023-2024.

Going back to last season Barnsley have kept two clean sheets in their past three league matches, they managed only two in the previous 32.

This the earliest in a league campaign Barnsley have had a goal-less draw since 2011-2012 when they opened that Championship season with a 0-0 at Nottingham Forest and they have already equalled the amount from the past three seasons.

Ironically this is the first 0-0 in a Yorkshire derby since Daniel Stendel took them to Doncaster in 2018-2019.

It is the first season Barnsley have kept a clean sheet in their first away league game of a season since Stendel’s first – a 2-0 win at Bradford on the 11th August 2018.

2026-2027 is the first season Barnsley have failed to win either of their first two league games of a season since 2020-2021 however successive defeats that campaign saw them sat in 20th in the Championship table. This is the first season Barnsley have sat in the relegation places after two matches since 2017-2018 when they were relegated from the Championship 44 matches later.

This is the first third tier campaign in which Barnsley have failed to claim three points after two matches since 2002-2003 and first third tier season they have sat in the relegation places since 1979-1980.

They have drawn two of their first three games of a season (all comps) for the first time since 2023-2024.

Barnsley have now won only two of their last 15 league matches.

Stendel has failed to win any of his last 12 league games as Barnsley manager at any level (D4 L8) and excluding shootouts any of his last 13 (D5 L8)

This was the third stalemate in the last seven meetings between these two sides whilst there have been six in the last 13.

This draw did end a four game run of WLWL for Barnsley in all competitions.

The Reds have now failed to score in successive meetings for the first time in 12 meetings.

This is not a high scoring derby, only once in the last 11 meetings have both teams netted more than once and that was a 4-2 EFL Trophy win for Barnsley in October 2022.

This was the fifth goal-less meeting, three of which have come since 2013.

Barnsley had only one shot on target, their lowest in ten matches (all comps)
