Barnsley 1-2 Cambridge United

Last Updated : 19-Oct-2026 by Robert Miles

Barnsley’s fourth defeat in five league outings saw them drop to their lowest position in the football pyramid since the opening day of the 2022-2023 season.

A 1-0 defeat at Plymouth following relegation from the Championship saw them sit in 21st in League One however they occupy a relegation sport in the third tier in a later month than August for the first time since spending every day between the 24th October 2015 and 27th December 2015 there. Obviously that season would see Barnsley stage a remarkable recovery to finish sixth and win promotion via the play-offs.

This defeat extended an horrendous run which has seen them fail to win any of their last eight matches in all competitions (D2 L6), their worst run since failing to win of their final nine Championship games of 2021-2022 (D2 L7) whilst it their worst run as a League One team since a run of nine League One games without a win between 17th March 2015 and 25th April 2015 (D6 L3)

They have gone five league games without a win (D1 L4) for the first time since a run of six between 10th March and 6th April this year (D4 L2)

Barnsley have now won only nine of the 35 league games they have played in 2026 (26%) losing 14.

Barnsley have lost four games in a row (all comps) for the first time since September 2025.

Barnsley have scored exactly one goal in three successive games for the first time since the final three games of last season.

For the second game in a row Barnsley opened the scoring before going on to lose, the first time this has happened in successive games for 12 years, last occurring in October 2014 (1-2 defeat to Peterborough and 2-3 v Notts County)

Cambridge’s winner came in injury time, the first time Barnsley have lost due to a goal scored after 90 minutes or later for 13 months since losing 1-0 at Blackpool due to a goal scored on 90+8.

Barnsley have led at half time in successive league games for the first time since November 2025 (v Luton and Stockport)

Reyes Cleary and Arley Kay were yellow carded before half time, the first time two Barnsley players have been booked in the first half since the 25th April at Luton.

Conor O’Riordan was then yellow carded in the first minute of the second half, the earliest Barnsley have received three bookings since the 18th April 2025 at Leyton Orient when they had three by the 40th minute, and earliest at Oakwell since the 7th December 2024 against Birmingham (three after 38 minutes)

Jack Shepherd who has now been yellow carded in three of his five appearances this season is the Red’s 20th yellow card received in the 90th minute or later since the start of last season.

Shepherd has now received 28 yellow cards in 126 appearances for Barnsley, Bradford and Cheltenham (22% of his appearances)-he has also been sent off three times.

Five Barnsley players were yellow carded in a game for the first time since the 25th April at Luton.

There has been eight yellow cards in total in each of Barnsley’s last two home league games.

The Reds have now conceded 17 goals in League One this season – only three teams have conceded more.

They have only scored nine themselves and again only three teams have scored less.

It is the first time since 2021 they have still been in single figures for goals scored on the 17th October and the first time ever at this level.

Barnsley have now conceded 10 second half goals (all comps) since they last conceded before half time.

The Reds have kept only one clean sheet this season (from 14 matches in all competitions) and have kept only two in the last 19 stretching back to April.

They have staggeringly kept only three clean sheets in their past 42 League One games.

This game continued the club record run of home games without a clean sheet (all comps), it now stands at 24 matches. They have only managed one in their last 45 stretching back to February 2025.

Barnsley have failed to win any of their last four meetings with Cambridge after winning five in a row prior.

The home team has scored exactly one goal in each of the last three clashes and has not scored more than one in any of the last five.

This was only Cambridge’s third ever win at Oakwell (from 14) visits, two of which have come in their last three trips.

They are unbeaten in three visits to Oakwell, their best run of form at this ground.

Barnsley’s opponents have won 11 corners in each of the last two games.

Barnsley and their opponent won the same amount of corners for the first time 11 outings since both the Reds and Doncaster won four.
