A fourth stalemate in five
outings sees the draw column sneak ever closer to the same tally as win and
losses in Barnsley’s 2025-2026 League One campaign so far. This was Barnsley’s
12th league draw compared with 13 wins and 13 losses – eight of
those 12 draws (67%) have come since the turn of the year.
It is the first time Barnsley
have drawn four out of five league games since August/September 2021.
This point was rescued by
another late show from David McGoldrick, netting a 90th minute
equaliser to end his run of successive games without scoring following a run of
12 goals in 13 appearances.
He means he has scored in the
90th minute or later twice against Burton this season, goals which have
earned the Reds three points.
It was the 38 year olds 18th
goal of the season which means he has surpassed his tally from last season with
Notts County and is his most goals in a campaign since scoring 25 for Derby in
2022-2023.
It is league goal number 15
which moves up to joint fifth in League One this season alongside Blackpool’s
Ashley Fletcher – Dom Ballard (21), Kyle Wootton (19), Jack Marriott and Jayden
Wareham (both 16) are the only players with more League One goals so far this
season.
Six of McGoldrick’s last seven
strikes have come away from Oakwell – 10 of the previous 11 had been scored at
home.
Barnsley’s last two goals have been scored in the 90th
minute or later (also Charlie Lennon v Wigan) whilst there has been a 90+minute
goal scored in three of Barnsley’s last four games.
McGoldrick himself has done it on three occasions for Barnsley
season, also netting a last minute winner against Blackpool in January.
It is the most 90+minute goals McGoldrick has scored in a season,
surpassing the tally of twice in which he has achieved it in each of the past
two campaigns and also in 2008-2009.
This is the second time this season Barnsley have endured a five
match winless run in the league, also occurring in September/October.
Kieren Flavell made his seventh league start in goal for Barnsley
and the Reds have won only one (4-1 v Bolton in April 2025) (W1 D3 L3)
Three of his seven starts have seen Barnsley draw 1-1.
There was a surprising name on the bench in the form of Scott
Flinders who started his playing career at Oakwell and made his debut as an 18
year old in a 3-1 win at Peterborough in March 2005. He returned 20 years later
in June 2025 as goalkeeping coach but due to Owen Goodman’s unavailability was
named in a Barnsley matchday squad for the first time since the League One Play-Off
Final of 2005-2006.
Friday is not a good day for Barnsley, they have now failed to win
any of their last three matches on this weekday (D1 L2) and have lost five of
the last seven, winning only two of the last 11.
Good Friday is no better, they have now failed to win any of their
last six fixtures on this date (D3 L3) with this point ending a run of three
successive defeats. Barnsley last won a Good Friday fixture in 2019 when they
defeated Shrewsbury 2-1.
Jonathan Bland came on for Eoghan O’Connell after just seven
minutes, Barnsley’s earliest substitution for a decade since Sam Winnall was
replaced by Marley Watkins after four minutes of the opening game of the
2016-2017 season.
Marc Roberts was shown a yellow card after 95 minutes of the game,
Barnsley’s 11th second half injury time booking this season.
Roberts was both booked and assisted a goal, becoming the fourth
Barnsley player to do this in 2025-2026 after Adam Phillips, Reyes Cleary and Tennai
Watson.
Both he and Leo Farrell were yellow carded, the first time
Barnsley have had two subs booked since the FA Cup Second Round tie at
Peterborough in December and first time in a league game since the opening game
of the season at Plymouth.
Barnsley
have now gone 24 league games without a clean sheet, their longest run since another
streak of 24 games between 13th December 1952 and 19th
August 1953 which encompassed the final 23 games of the 1952-1953 season in the
second tier and opening game of 1953-1954 in the third tier. That 1952-1953
season is the last time Barnsley kept less league clean sheets in a campaign
than they have this season, they have kept two in 2025-2026 so far and kept
only one, against West Ham 73 years ago.
Barnsley are now unbeaten in the last six meetings with Burton (W4
D2) and have only lost three of the 17 meetings in total.
The home team has scored one goal or less in four of the last five
meetings.
This was the third time Barnsley have scored a goal against the Brewers
in the 90th minute or later, all of which have come within the last
four meetings and it has earned Barnsley a total of five points.
Barnsley have lost only two of eight visits to the Pirelli and are
now unbeaten in three (W2 D1), the Brewers have now failed to score more than
one goal in five of their eight home games with Barnsley.
Both Barnsley and Burton had 11
shots in the game, the first time both the Reds and their opponents have had
the same amount of shots in 23 matches (all comps) since both they and Lincoln
had 15 on the 9th December.
The Reds failed to win a single
corner, something that has not occurred since a home meeting with Cambridge on
the 29th March 2024 and hasn’t happened on the road since the 25th
January 2022 at Nottingham Forest.
However it is the second time
in six meetings with Burton that it has occurred – also a 2-0 home win on the
16th September 2023, meaning two of the last three occurrences have
come against the Brewers.
