Barnsley picked up their first
three point haul of 2026-2027 with an impressive away victory at Leyton Orient,
the second successive season the Reds have won 3-1 at the BetWright.
It is the third successive
season that Barnsley’s first league win of the season has come away from
Oakwell.
It is the second time in three
seasons that Barnsley have achieved each result (W1D1L1) in their opening three
league games having also done so in 2024-2025.
Indeed it has occurred in three
of the last four League One campaigns with the anomaly being last season when
they won two and drew one.
It is also the second time in
three seasons (also 2024-2025) in which the Reds have lost their league season
opener but then remained unbeaten in the next two – they were unbeaten in the
next four in that campaign.
This was Barnsley’s biggest
away league win in six such outings whilst remarkably three of their last four
away league wins have come via a 3-1 scoreline, two of which have been at
Leyton Orient (a 3-1 win at Rotherham in April being the only with the anomaly
in the sequence being a 1-0 win at Northampton on the 28th April)
Since the start of 2025-2026
Barnsley have won seven league matches on the road, and four of them have been
3-1.
Makenzie Kirk opened the scoring with his first goal for the club
and he has now equalled his EFL tally of goals from 2025-2026.
The second goal came from the penalty spot via captain Cameron
McGeehan, his first league strike for the club since November 2019.
It was only the third penalty Barnsley have been awarded in their
last 42 league outings – only two of which have been scored, it’s the first
converted league penalty since Adam Phillips netted against Reading on the 13th
September 2025.
It is the first time McGeehan has ever scored a penalty for the
Reds, in his 73rd appearance.
Following the EFL Cup success over Crewe in midweek Barnsley have
won successive matches for the first time since November when they defeated
York in the FA Cup and then Doncaster in the league – this was the 42nd
match since that Doncaster win.
They have scored as many as three goals in back to back games for
the first time in exactly 12 months when they defeated Huddersfield 3-1 and
Reading 3-2.
Kirk’s goal was the first to come before half-time in a Barnsley
league game this season, it’s the longest wait for a first half league goal
since 2020-2021 when it did not arrive until the fourth match.
It was Barnsley’s earliest goal in 18 outings since David
McGoldrick netted after eight minutes of a 2-1 win over Exeter on the 7th
March.
It is the first goal by a striker in nine games (all comps) since
Leo Farrell netted a last minute equaliser against Bradford on the 18th
April.
Jonathan Bland has now been booked
in three successive appearances.
The one blot on Barnsley’s
copybook was conceding a goal – courtesy of a poor backpass from Corey
O’Keeffe, however after three games the Reds have the joint best defensive
record in the division, being one of four teams to have only conceded twice.
It is half the amount they had
conceded at this stage last season on their way to being the second highest
conceders that season.
This was only Barnsley’s third
win in 16 matches.
Whilst Daniel Stendel picked up
his first league win in 13 games as Barnsley manager, having last brought three
points to the club in the opening game of the 2019-2020 season (D4 L8)
It is Stendel’s 28th
league win as Barnsley manager (from 60 matches – 47%) all bar one have come in
League One.
This was Barnsley’s third
successive win over Orient, all of which have seen them net three goals.
Indeed they have scored three
times in each of the last four meetings whilst one team has netted at least
three in each of the last five.
There has been a total of 24
goals scored in the past five meetings – an average of 4.8 goals per game.
The Reds have won four of the
last six meetings and seven of the last 11 with this the fourth occasion in
history they have won three meetings in a row.
This was the second successive
season Barnsley have won 3-1 at Orient whilst the scorelines from this trio of
victories is 3-2, 3-1, 3-1.
Remarkably it is only the fifth
time Barnsley have won at Orient, two of which have come in 2026 and three have
arrived in a year ending in 26 (2026x2, 1982, 1926 and 1922)
There were 26 fouls in the match, the most in
41 Barnsley matches (also 26 in an EFL Trophy tie against Lincoln in November
2025) – it is the most in a league match since the 25th October 2025
against Rotherham (also 26)
