Barnsley have followed up back to back victories with successive
hammerings conceding eight goals in the process to drop from fifth to 18th in
10 days.
It is the first time Barnsley have won two league games in a row
and then lost two in a row since this time last year when they defeated
Huddersfield and Reading in August/September and then lost to Blackpool and
Port Vale.
They made the worst possible start conceding in the first minute,
the first time since Valentine's Day 2023 that there has been a goal scored in
the opening minute of a Barnsley game when Luca Connell netted at Port Vale
whilst it is the first time the Reds have conceded this early since the 8th
October 2022, Jay Stansfield scoring for Exeter at Oakwell.
Incidentally it is the first time Barnsley have conceded in the
opening minute on the road since the 10th March 2018 at Middlesbrough.
One became two after 21 minutes, the earliest in a game Barnsley
have been 2-0 down since the 7th February at Bolton - 19 minutes.
Barnsley have now kept only three clean sheets in their past 38
League One games and only three League One sides have now conceded more than
the 11 they have in the opening six games (Bromley 17, Wycombe 14, Luton 13)
Barnsley have conceded three-plus goals in successive league games
for the first time since February when they lost 3-2 at Bolton and then drew
3-3 with Wimbledon.
It is the first time Barnsley have lost a game 3-0 since the 6th
April, the opponents that day... Plymouth.
Barnsley have lost three of their opening six league games for the
first time since 2022-2023 - however they did go on to make the play-off final
that season. They had an identical record to this season with two wins, one
draw and three defeats and on both occasions one of those defeats has been at Plymouth.
Barnsley are one of seven League One sides to have this 50% loss
record so far this season with only one team having lost more (Wigan with 4)
It was another blank in front of goal with the Reds having only
netted six times in the opening six games, only three League One sides have
scored less (Peterborough 4, Wimbledon/Wigan 5)
As well as losing three of their opening six games, Barnsley have
also failed to score in three of the opening six for the first time since
drawing a blank in their opening three league games of 2020-2021 in the
Championship (another season that finished in the play-offs). It is the first
time at this level since 1979-1980 when they drew a blank in three of the
opening four games.
Sam Gale was booked after only nine minutes, Barnsley's earliest
yellow since Mael de Gevigney was booked after seven minutes at Mansfield 20
games ago (all comps)
The only other booking was a
90th minute card for Tyrese Noslin, the Reds fifth yellow in the 90th minute or
later this season from eight games (all comps), that is 31% of the 16 yellows
they have received so far this season.
Last weekend Barnsley suffered
their heaviest home league defeat since March 2024 with this weekend bringing
their heaviest away league defeat since the 27th January 2026 when
they lost 4-0 at Cardiff, it is their heaviest away league defeat on a Saturday
this calendar year.
Barnsley have now lost back to
back meetings with Plymouth by a 3-0 scoreline, the first time they have had the
same scoreline in successive meetings since back to back 1-1 draws in September
2002 and March 2003.
One team has scored three times
in each of the last four meetings and five of the last six – each have achieved
it three times.
Three of the last four meetings
have ended 3-0 and four of the last six.
It is the eighth time in 72
meetings overall this scoreline has occurred – half of which have occurred since
2019.
Each of Barnsley’s last four visits
to this part of Devon have seen them alternate between a win and a defeat with
this only their fourth defeat in the last 11 trips.
Barnsley have lost three of the
last five meetings, failing to score in each one.
Only one team has managed to
score in five of the last six meetings and six of the last eight – the exceptions
being a 1-1 draw in October 2018 and a 3-1 Barnsley win on the opening day of
last season.
Barnsley have lost successive
meetings for the first time since August 1991/January 1992, the two sides have
met 21 times since.
Barnsley have had more than 60%
ball possession in three league games so far in 2026-2027 and lost two of them (v
Bromley and Plymouth) whilst beating Blackpool however they had more against Bromley
(66.7%) and Plymouth (63.4%) than they did against Blackpool (60.8%)
The Reds failed to muster a
single shot on target for the first time in 22 matches (all comps) since the
1-0 home defeat to Wycombe on the 3rd March and the first time in 49
away matches, since a 2-0 EFL Trophy defeat at Huddersfield on the 8th
October 2024.
It is the first time they have
failed to have a shot on target in an away league game since the 19th
February 2022 at Coventry in the Championship.
