A late penalty save from goalkeeper Joe Martin ensured Barnsley’s Under 18 earned a valuable 0-0 draw with fellow promotion chasing Derby County at Oakwell this morning.
The two sides went into the game second and third respectively, chasing the coat tails of league leaders Newcastle and in a competitive encounter a draw was probably the fair result.
Blustery conditions made attractive football difficult, with The Reds best effort seeing Jordan Clark tee up Kurtis Turner for an effort that was smartly saved. The game looked odds on ending goal-less until the 85th minute when the referee awarded the visitors a penalty but 17-year-old Martin produced a tremendous save.
The draw extended The Reds winless run to five matches, but they remain second, two points behind Newcastle.
