Barnsley’s Under 18 Academy side lost leadership of the FA Premier Academy League Group D on Saturday after slipping to a 2-0 home defeat to Middlesbrough.

Boro who had won just two of their opening 11 matches capitalised on Barnsley wastefulness to return to the North East with all three points. A brace in the space of two minutes from Wilson Kneeshaw did the damage despite The Reds having a host of chances. The best of which saw a fantastic effort from Jordan Clark cleared off the line.

The defeat- Barnsley’s third of the season saw Newcastle go three points clear at the top of the group after a thrilling 4-3 win over Derby. The Reds next match is at home to local rivals Leeds at 11am on Saturday. The Whites sit fourth.

Barnsley: Martin, Scott, Steade, Stones, Kilburn, Turner, Patterson (Williams), Clark, Abbott (Digby), Noble-Lazarus, Mukendi (McLeod).

Subs: Moyo, Rusling.

Meanwhile Barnsley have received more international recognition after the club’s Sports Rehabilitator/Nutritionist John Lucas has been invited to team up with the Wales Under 16 squad for their clash with Northern Ireland tomorrow.

The 27 year old joined the Reds this summer from Rochdale along with manager Keith Hill and assistant David Flitcroft and will be part of the Welsh medical team in Porthmadog.
