Barnsley’s Under 21 side claimed a notable friendly victory against a Newcastle side on the Academy pitch today.
The Reds side contained a host of players who have been included in manager Danny Wilson’s first team squad this pre-season including Reuben Noble-Lazarus, Paul Digby, and Nana Boakye-Yiadom.
It was George Maris who stole the show however, as the 18 year old striker who has been handed the number 26 shirt this summer and was an unused substitute for the first team’s encounters with Halifax and Hull, netted in the 35th and 54th minutes to first bring Barnsley level at 1-1 and then put them 2-1 in front.
Boakye-Niadom also 18, who is set to play a major role in the first team this season, put The Reds 3-1 up.
The Reds were up against a decent Newcastle side that included England Under 19 international Adam Campbell and Under 17 international Adam Armstrong (who has netted 10 goals in 12 games for his country).
The pair of Adam’s who have seven first team Newcastle appearances between them grabbed the Toon’s goals, Campbell in the 20th minute and Armstrong in the 89th.
The Barnsley side also included 17-year-old defender Jack Cowgill who has today signed his first professional contract at Oakwell.
The 6ft 4” centre back who earned a place on the bench for the final game of 2013-2014 against Queens Park Rangers and started the first pre-season friendly at Halifax has signed a two year deal taking him up to the summer of 2016.
