Port Vale 3-2 Barnsley

It was a familiar face to be that sunk the Reds in their last visit to Vale Park. Sam Togwell, who joined Andy Ritchie's side from Crystal Palace the following season scored a 73rd minute winner for Martin Foyle's Vale.

Quick fire first half goals from midfielder Danny Sonner and Leon Constantine sent the Reds in at half time two goals down. Sonner driving home from 20 yards and Constantine turning in Togwell's cross-shot.

But a second half fightback saw the Reds turn the game around. Firstly, Australian midfielder Jacob Burns fired a low shot past Mark Goodlad and eleven minutes later, centre back Matt Carbon bundled home after a Tommy Wright header was saved.

But Vale and Togwell had the last laugh when the Crystal Palace loanee diverted in a wayward shot to leave Nick Colgan with no chance.

Despite this defeat, the Reds were promoted to the Championship via the playoffs four months later.

Port Vale 5-0 Barnsley

An instantly forgettable afternoon at the end of the 2004-2005 season as Vale crushed a vastly inexperienced Barnsley side under Andy Ritchie as caretaker following Paul Hart's departure.

A Chris Birchall stunner and two goals apiece for Billy Paynter and Tony Dinning saw off a weak Barnsley performance as the season petered out. The Reds eventually finished 13th in League One.

Barnsley XI: Flinders, Tonge, Reid (Austin 45), Kay, Williams, Shuker, Wroe,  McPhail, Burns, Johnson (Joynes 65 (Atkinson 85)), Jarman.
