Barnsley F.C Player Season Reports: 2007-2008

Dennis Souza:

League: 45: 2

FA Cup: 5: 0

League Cup: 2: 0

Described as "bargain of the season" by Davey. And that's not a bad assessment. Signed on a free transfer from Charleroi, Souza took to English football like a duck to water. He dominated in the air and on the ground with every bad tackle or pass greeted with frustration etched on his face. His form dipped slightly in the middle of the season (most notably at Hull and Coventry) but he came back to the fore at the end of the season as The Reds escaped relegation and knocked Liverpool and Chelsea out of the FA Cup. It is just to be hoped second season syndrome doesn't affect the brilliant Brazilian. A

Luke Steele:

League: 14: 0 Clean Sheets: 4

FA Cup: 3: 0 Clean Sheets: 1

League Cup: 0: 0

Had the kind of debut young footballers can only dream of. An injury to Heinz Muller, sent the former Manchester United youngster from West Brom's reserves to the hero at Anfield, clean sheet against Chelsea and a place at Wembley. Signed a one year contract to stay at Oakwell and compete with a fit again Muller for the No.1 jersey. B

Miguel Tininho:

League: 3: 0

FA Cup: 1: 0

League Cup: 0: 0

Another loanee from West Brom but with the opposite success. Four steady performances but not enough to be kept on. D

Sam Togwell:

League: 10(12) 1

FA Cup: 1(2) 0

League Cup: 1(1) 0

My thoughts of this player are well documented and after 48 starts last season, the fact he managed just 12 in 2007-2008 shows that the Barnsley management might finally be agreeing with me. Had his best game by far in the 2-2 draw with Southampton but has not contributed nearly enough. Now transfer-listed by Davey, he will actually be missed by quite a few Reds fans. I will not be one of them. E

Marciano Van Homoet

League: 17(2) 0

FA Cup: 4(1) 0

League Cup: 0: 0

A pre-season broken hand meant his Barnsley debut was delayed until December and even then it wasn't even with the surname he arrived with. The Dutchman has looked at home though in the left back role. Plenty of pace and good in the tackle. Kept Florent Malouda deathly quiet in the FA Cup. C+
