Barnsley 0-2 Middlesbrough

Last updated : 06 January 2015 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Barnsley have now been eliminated at the third round stage of the FA Cup in five of the last six seasons since their run to the Semi-Finals in 2008.

However thanks to starting in the first round this season they have won at least two ties in two of the last three campaigns.

The Reds scored eight goals in the 2014-2015 FA Cup, their best run since also netting eight in 2005-2006, which was also the last time they entered the competition in the first round.

Barnsley have gone from scoring in 15 out of 16 matches in all competitions to going back to back games without a goal for the first time since the first two matches of the season.

They managed just ONE shot on target in the whole game, their worst attacking display since they also managed just one in a 2-1 defeat at Peterborough in October- Devante Cole scored with that one effort.

It is their worst at Oakwell since a 1-0 defeat to Burnley last April when they failed to muster a single shot on target.

Barnsley lost a game when playing against ten men for the first time since a 1-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday last February. However they themselves finished that game with nine men.

The last time they lost when playing 11 v 10 was again at Hillsborough, in a 2-1 reverse in March 2013.

Barnsley lost when drawing 0-0 at half time for only the third time this season, the 1-0 defeat to Crawley on the opening day and the 3-0 defeat to Swindon were the other two.

Boosted by 3,400 travelling Middlesbrough supporters, 9,473 were in attendance at Oakwell yesterday, the Reds biggest home crowd in the competition since the unforgettable victory over Chelsea in 2008 when 22,410 saw Kayode Odejayi send Barnsley to Wembley.

Barnsley lost at home to Middlesbrough for only the second time in seven Oakwell meetings.

This was the first time Middlesbrough have won their first match of the New Year in six years, Barnsley have now gone a staggering 15 years since they managed it.
