Barnsley 2-0 York City.

Last updated : 03 September 2014 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Barnsley finally won their first ever Football League Trophy match without the need for a penalty shootout, at the sixth time of asking.

It extends The Reds unbeaten run in all competitions to five matches, their best run for 18 months.

Barnsley also recorded their first clean sheet of the season; it is their longest run without a shut out from the start of the season for seven years. In 2007-2008 it also took seven matches.

Barnsley won a match by two clear goals for only the second time in 15 games.

They have now won two home matches in a row for the first time since March.

York’s wretched run in the Football League Trophy and at Oakwell continued. The Minstermen have now won just one of their nine matches in the competition and have won just one of their 12 visits to Oakwell. This was Barnsley’s ninth home win against them.

Last night’s defeat ended York’s remarkable away record. Nigel Worthington’s side had gone 11 matches on the road without defeat stretching back to January. This was also only their fifth defeat in all competitions in 2014.

Their only two defeats this season have both come in cup competitions, to South Yorkshire sides.
