Barnsley Are Masters Again!
Reds retain trophy
Barnsley delivered a successful defence of their Yorkshire Masters crown at the Sheffield Arena last night to power into the National Masters to be held in Birmingham in September.
The Reds- who before last year's event had never won a game in this tournament, defeated Sheffield Wednesday on penalties in the final in 2009, and defeated their old foes again last night to book their place in Birmingham.
Andy Liddell- who scored 34 goals in 198 appearances at Oakwell between 1991 and 1998 grabbed the winner in a 2-1 success with just four seconds remaining! Liddell, who only retired from the professional game at the end of last season had earlier given The Reds the lead.
The Barnsley side which comprised of Kevin Miller (with Barnsley 1999-2002), Neil Thompson (1996-1998), Darren Sheridan (1993-1999), Nicky Eaden (1992-2000), Deiniol Graham (1991-1994), Bruce Dyer (1998-2003), Dean Gorre (2001-2004) and Andy Liddell (1991-1998), saw off competition from Sheffield United, Wednesday, Doncaster, Hull and Huddersfield to retain their title.
The other teams who will compete at the LG Arena in the Second City are Central Masters winners Nottingham Forest, Mersey Masters winners Tranmere (the defending National Masters champions), Northern Masters winners Sunderland, North West Masters winners Manchester City and London Masters champions Queens Park Rangers. Also competing will be the "host" teams Birmingham and Aston Villa who didn't need to qualify.
Barnsley will be hoping they do A LOT better than when they went to the National heats last year and were thumped 8-3 by Bolton at the first hurdle.
