Barnsley v Bradford: Final Home Game of the Season.

Last updated : 29 April 2006 By Rob Miles (barnsley Boy)

Reds boss Andy Ritchie has problems in his defence with Paul Reid suspended and Neil Austin injured.

Player of the Year favourite Bobby Hassell and Dale Tonge are likely to step in. Hassell hasn't started a game since injuring his ribs in February whilst Tonge who has been out with a knee injury hasn't appeared since January.

Matt Carbon is still a week away from returning whilst Richard Kell is out for the season and Tony Vaughan was released this week.

Ritchie may decide to freshen up his strike force again:

Paul Hayes hasn't scored since Valentines Day and has just one goal in 20 games. He does have 3 in 3 against Bradford this season however.

Marc Richards hasn't scored since the 4th of March (a penalty) and has just one goal in 13 games.

Tommy Wright has just one goal for the club since making his debut on the 2nd of January

Daniel Nardiello's last goal was also on the 4th of March and has just one goal in 18 games.

Probable Line-Up:

Nick Colgan

Dale Tonge

Antony Kay

Bobby Hassell

Paul Heckingbottom

Martin Devaney

Stephen McPhail

Brian Howard

Chris Shuker

Paul Hayes

Marc Richards

Barnsley though have a good record at Oakwell against the Bantams and nobody of a Red persuasion will forget the last time these two sides met at Oakwell on the penultimate day of the season.

Goals from Paul Wilkinson and Clint Marcelle back on 26th April 1997 saw Barnsley achieve the impossible dream of Premiership football.

In fact Barnsley are unbeaten at home against Bradford since 1999 when the Bantams grabbed a 1-0 victory. That victory is Bradford's only success at Oakwell in 28 years!

This will be the fourth meeting between the sides this season.

In the reverse league fixture The Reds secured a 0-0 draw at The Pulse Stadium on 12th November despite playing for 54 minutes with 10 men after Brian Howard was controversially sent off.

The teams also met in the Second Round of the FA Cup.

The original tie at Oakwell was a very mundane affair that ended 1-1 with a late Scott Flinders mistake allowing Bradford to earn a replay.

However the replay was a pulsating affair. After pummelling Scunthorpe 5-2 in the league The Reds blitzed Bradford 5-3 three days later.

Two Martin Devaney strikes in extra time saw them through. They then met and lost to Walsall in the next round (ironically Walsall are Barnsley's final league opponents after today).

Last season's game at Oakwell was another rip-roaring affair, shown live on Sky on a cold January night.

Barnsley were 2-0 down at half-time as Dean Windass first capitalised on a poor Kay back pass to round Turnbull and score and then slotted home a penalty after a foul by Tom Williams ( a foul though that was committed outside the area)

The Reds stormed back though in the second half thanks to a superb strike from Michael Chopra and a last minute tap-in from Kay.

On Current Form, Barnsley are still unbeaten at home since September but have drawn their last 4 home games and haven't tasted Oakwell success since defeating Colchester on the 25th February.

Meanwhile on their travels Bradford haven't won since defeating Bournemouth on the 11th March. That was their first away success since winning at Yeovil on the 21st January, a total of 2 away wins in 8.
