Interesting Stats:

The last time these two sides met was also in the First Round of the League Cup, exactly six years ago to the day. Back on the 12th August 2008 two penalties saw Crewe progress with a 2-0 win at Gresty Road.

They also met in this competition in 2000-2001. Barnsley won a two-legged Second Round affair 4-0 at Oakwell and 3-0 at Gresty Road.

It is 13 years and five meetings since Barnsley last defeated Crewe and they have scored just once in the last four encounters.

Even that goal was an own goal by the Crewe goalkeeper Clayton Ince; meaning Alex Neil on the 15th September 2001 is the last Barnsley player to score against the Railwaymen.

An ex Red has netted in this fixture within that time. A 22-year-old Stephen Foster netted the opening goal in a 2-0 Crewe victory back in 2002, five years before he signed for the Reds. Foster, who retired this summer was also in the Alex side the last time they played at Oakwell.

The next goal Barnsley score against Crewe however will be their 100th in this fixture. Crewe currently lag well back having netted 61 times.

Indeed Barnsley have scored more Oakwell goals than Crewe have managed in this fixture altogether and the Alex have emerged from this part of South Yorkshire victorious on just three occasions from 25 visits.

Two of those occurred this century but they have won one and lost three of their past four visits.

There has been a winner in this fixture in each of the last seven meetings, and in only one of those has both teams scored.

Crewe have lost just two of their last seven matches going back to last season but they were defeated 2-1 at Fleetwood on the opening day of this campaign.

Crewe have won three of their last five away matches but have lost their last four League Cup matches on the road.

The Alex have progressed past the First Round in just two of the last six seasons.

Barnsley have lost each of their last five matches and have failed to win any of their last six at home.

The Reds have scored just once at Oakwell in those six games.

Barnsley have got past the First Round of the League Cup in each of the past two seasons, going out in the Second Round on both occasions.
