Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh said:

“I don’t think anything went wrong, possibly we were a bit too open and I don’t think we controlled the game as we have done, certainly away from home.

"Their goal came against the run of play, we started very well and in the first five minutes we did really control it but we never got back to that, even when we got level.”

Interesting Stats:

Barnsley have won each of their last five meetings with Gillingham, scoring 13 times and conceding just twice.

They have kept clean sheets in three of the past four meetings.

Two of the last three Oakwell meetings have finished 4-1 to the Reds.

In total the Gills have won just six times against Barnsley and only two of the last eight clashes.

Barnsley have lost just ONCE at Oakwell against Gillingham, which came in 1968, 11 meetings ago. The Reds have won eight of those 11 clashes, including each of the last four.

Gillingham have scored more than once against Barnsley in only two of the last ten meetings, Barnsley have managed to score at least THREE times in four of those.

Should they net three again this weekend they will reach 50 goals v the Gills in only 29 clashes.

Gillingham have made their best start to a season for three years. They have 17 points from eight matches and last Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Colchester was their first reverse of the season.

The Gills have won five of their first eight matches and scored 14 times -only Coventry and Bury with 15 have scored more- whilst conceding only six -only Walsall and Rochdale with five- have conceded less.

Compared to a perfect home record, Gillingham have an indifferent record away from the Priestfield Stadium. Justin Edinburgh’s side have won four out of four in front of their own supporters, but have managed just ONE win on the road. That was however in Yorkshire, when they triumphed 2-1 at Bradford last month.

Five of the six goals they have conceded this season have come away from home.

Despite being one of the division’s lowest conceders, Gillingham have kept only three clean sheets, but Colchester were the first side to net more than once against them.

They have yet to keep a clean sheet on the road this season and it is 10 matches since they last kept an away clean sheet.

However the Gills have scored in all eight games, the first time they have scored in all of their first eight matches since 2012-2013 when they were a League Two outfit.

As mentioned before, Gillingham were defeated at Colchester last time out, they are yet to suffer back to back defeats since Edinburgh arrived at the club in February.

They have won nearly half of their matches since the end of January (16 of 32 in all competitions)
