Barnsley v Port Vale

Team News

Barnsley should be boosted by the return of first choice centre backs Martin Cranie and Peter Ramage but this weekend comes too soon for Sam Winnall.

Reece Brown has now left the club and therefore can not be considered.

There are not expected to be any new arrivals at the club until transfer deadline day, but manager Danny Wilson has promised changes following four defeats in five.

Interesting Stats:

Port Vale are one of Barnsley’s oldest rivals. The two sides have met 108 times dating back to 1898.

The record over those 117 years has been pretty even, with Port Vale’s 2-1 win at Vale Park just edging them ahead 45 wins to 44.

However Barnsley have failed to win any of the last nine meetings, losing six.

Over the years Barnsley have a terrific home record over Port Vale but an abysmal one away.

The Reds have won 34 of the 52 Oakwell meetings, losing just nine, although they have failed to win any of the last three. At Port Vale, Barnsley have lost 36 of 56 trips, winning just ten.

The last time Barnsley defeated Port Vale was also the first season after relegation from the second tier, Rory Fallon and Paul Gibbs secured a 2-1 victory at Oakwell in December 2002, The Reds only success against Vale in 11 attempts.

If a player in red nets tomorrow (which is not a given considering Barnsley have failed to score in three of their past four matches) it will be their 100th home league goal against Port Vale. They need five more to reach 150 league goals against them overall.

Port Vale ended a six match losing streak by defeating Barnsley 2-1 back in September. They have lost just seven of 18 since (winning eight) to sit just three points off the play-off places.

Each of Port Vale’s last four victories, and five of the last six have been by a 2-1 scoreline.

Vale are in a bit of a rut at the minute, with their record in the last six matches reading WLWLWL.

Vale have also won only one of the last five on the road.

Port Vale have gone ten matches since their last clean sheet and have kept just one from their last 13.

Despite sitting in 12th place, Port Vale have lost 12 matches this season, only four sides (three of whom are in the relegation zone) have lost more.

Port Vale have also conceded the most goals (38) and have the worst goal difference (-5) amongst the top half teams.

The Burslem outfit have struggled on the road this season, losing seven of their 13 away matches and winning just three.

They have conceded 20 away goals this season, only five teams have conceded more whilst the 13 they have scored away from Vale Park is the sixth worst in the division.
