Southend manager Phil Brown said:

“In the end they’ve done a smash-and-grab on us and taken the spoils.

“It was all about the first goal today.

“Danny Wilson hasn’t come here to entertain the crowd. The 4-3-3 system that they put up against us was to come and get a point and they’ve got all three in the end.

“We hit the post in the first couple of minutes and then the follow-up by Dave Worrall has got to go in the back of the net. If that goes in, it becomes a different game.

“Tyrone Barnett’s had a good chance with a header, John White follows up and everything should go in the back of the net; the ball, John White, goalkeeper - everybody.

“It wasn’t meant to be. They’ve ended up getting a breakaway goal and we haven’t even got a point.
