Barnsley v York City.

Team News

Barnsley manager Danny Wilson has insisted he will take the Johnstones Paint Trophy seriously so will likely play a strong side.

Keith Treacy is a doubt after going off half an hour into the weekend draw with Yeovil.

James Bailey missed that match with a groin injury so may not be risked.

Strikers Kane Hemmings and Devante Cole are both pushing for their first starts for the club and Wilson could give Ross Turnbull his debut in goal.

Interesting Stats:

This will be only the second Barnsley/York meeting in 36 years and the first for 11.

There has been 28 clashes in total and York have won only two, one at home and one away.

The Reds have won four of the last five meetings at Oakwell and York’s only victory there came way back in 1967.

The last time the two sides met was in an FA Cup tie in 2003, ironically this was the last season that Barnsley had a points tally higher than what we have now by the end of August.

This will be the seventh cup meeting between Barnsley and York and Barnsley are yet to lose.

York have had a remarkable start to their third season back in the Football League as they have drawn every one of their five League Two matches so far.

The only deviant was a 1-0 League Cup result to Barnsley’s South Yorkshire rivals Doncaster.

The Minstermen have drawn each of their last four away matches but are unbeaten in their last 11 matches on the road.

Indeed Nigel Worthington’s side have lost just one away match in 2014, at Hartlepool back in January (W7 D5)

Overall it has been a remarkable 2014 for the North Yorkshire outfit. They have played 31 matches in all competitions in this calendar year, winning 14 and losing just four.

This remarkable run helped them go from second bottom in League Two at the end of 2013, to the Play-Off Semi-Finals five months later.

Barnsley have led at half-time in each of the last two matches. February 2013 was the last time they held a half time advantage for three matches in a row.

Conor Hourihane has now netted in three successive matches, the first Barnsley player to do this since Tomasz Cywka scored against Bristol City, Bolton and Burnley in February 2013. If the 23 year old Irishman nets against York he will be become the first Reds player to score in four successive games since Ricardo Vaz Te netted against Leeds, Peterborough, Crystal Palace and Ipswich in November/December 2011.

In The Reds last home game they managed to avoid setting a new club record of six successive home defeats by demolishing Gillingham 4-1. They now look to win two home games in a row for the first time since March.

Barnsley have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their first six games of the season for the first time in seven years. 2006 was the last time they did not have any shut outs from their first seven matches. It took nine games to manage it in that campaign.

The Reds are now unbeaten in four matches, their best run since October/November 2013. They are looking to make it five without defeat all competitions for the first time since February last year.

Johnstone Paint Trophy/ Football League Trophy Records:

Barnsley:

Barnsley have a horrendous record in this competition and have failed to win any of their five matches they have played in their history. Their only “success” came via winning a penalty shootout against Notts County in 2003.

The Reds have scored in only one of those five matches and have lost three of them 1-0.

Overall Record:

12/11/02 Bury (Ian Lawson 28) 1-0 Barnsley

15/10/03 Notts County 0-0 Barnsley (Barnsley win 4-2 on penalties)

York:

York will claim an even more woeful record than Barnsley having competed in seven seasons of the Football League Trophy, and winning just the once.
