The Reds completed a last minute swoop for Walsall striker Gary Birch ahead of the transfer deadline.

The 22-year-old came through the youth ranks at the Bescot Stadium before loan spells with Exeter City and Nuneaton Borough.

Reds boss Paul Hart told the official Barnsley website: "We have brought Gary in on loan because he is a young player with a lot of potential so hopefully he will give us a bit of impetus up front.

"I was very impressed with his performances in the First Division including a game against my old club Nottingham Forest.

"We have a lot of injuries to strikers at the moment. I am delighted to bring Gary to the club and am looking forward to working with him. He is a big player and has some presence on the pitch".
