Team News

Jean-Yves Mvoto’s availability all hinges on whether Barnsley decide to appeal his red card in the 5-2 weekend defeat at Blackburn. If not the Frenchman will serve a one match suspension.

Martin Cranie and Lewin Nyatanga are still unfit so 10 year veteran Bobby Hassell could start and make his first appearance of the season. New signings Paddy McCourt and Marcus Pedersen are pushing for starts, the Norwegian Pedersen set up Tomasz Cywka’s goal at the weekend after coming off the bench.

Interesting Stats

Barnsley have won just one of their last eight meetings with Southampton and have lost two and drawn one of the last three games at Oakwell.

Despite this Barnsley have won exactly double the amount of Oakwell meetings as Southampton have. (14 to 7)

The Reds have also failed to score a single goal in each of the last four meetings. Prior to this they had scored in each of the last 10.

The two sides have met once before in the League Cup and that was also at Oakwell back in 1997-1998 when both teams were Premier League outfits. Matt Le Tissier put the South Coast outfit in front on 15 minutes before Andy Liddell levelled on 26. Southampton grabbed a late winner however when Kevin Davies pounced just two minutes from time.

Southampton have not scored more than once in a game for nine matches but they are unbeaten in four games.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have won just two of their last 10 on the road, but one of those was their only away trip so far in 2013-2014, 1-0 at West Brom on the opening day.

Southampton have reached the Fourth Round in each of the last two seasons but were knocked out at the Second Round stage in each of the two seasons prior to this.

Barnsley have now won just one of their last 12 matches in all competitions and have failed to win any of their five games in 2013-2014, their worst run for 21 years.

This will be Barnsley’s fourth home game of the season, and they actually failed to win any of their first five home games of the 2011-2012 campaign.

The last time the Reds progressed past the Second Round of the League Cup was in 2009-2010 when they were knocked out in the Fourth Round by Manchester United.

That however is the only time in the past 11 years they have gone further than the Second Round.

Chris Dagnall should be relishing this tie, the 27 year old; who netted his first goal of the season on Saturday has scored six times in his last seven League Cup matches. He netted twice against Rochdale last season, scored against Accrington and Newcastle for Scunthorpe in 2011-2012, and got a brace for the Iron against Sheffield Wednesday in 2010-2011.

This is the first time that Barnsley have been drawn at home in both the First and Second Round of the League Cup since it changed to a one legged format in 1998-1999.
