Carling Cup First Round

Last updated : 13 June 2007 By Rob Miles (barnsley Boy)

The 2007-2008 season got underway with the draw for the Carling Cup First Round Draw.

Barnsley were the 10th game drawn and will face League Two Darlington at Oakwell.

In the past two seasons Barnsley have drawn 2-2 in the first round before winning through on penalties where they have then been eliminated in the Second Round.

The Reds have also not progressed past the 2nd Round since 2002 where they were eliminated by Newcastle in the 3rd Round.

Last time we failed to get past the 1st Round was in 2003 after a home defeat by Blackpool.

Facing Darlington poses a good omen for The Reds.

The last four meeting between the two sides have been in cup competitions, 3 of them in the League Cup.

They met in the First Round in 1994-1995 when after a 2-2 at Darlington and a 0-0 draw at Oakwell, The Reds went through on the away goals rule.

They again met in the First Round in 2004-2005 when Barnsley triumphed 2-0 at Darlington.

The most recent meeting was in the FA Cup First Round in 2005-2006 when Barnsley won 1-0 at Oakwell.

Overall in 10 cup meetings between Barnsley and Darlington, Barnsley are undefeated and the time the two teams were drawn together at Oakwell in the League Cup, Barnsley won 6-2! in 1963.

But the bad news is that Darlington are now managed by David Penney, who has Doncaster manager masterminded 5 successive wins over Barnsley in just 2 seasons including a 5-2 mauling at Oakwell in the LDV Trophy!

Also ex Reds striker Tommy Wright now plies his trade at Darlington.

The game will take place in the week commencing 13th August 2007.
