Carling Cup First Round: Lincoln City v Barnsley

Last updated : 10 August 2009 By Rob Miles (barnsley Boy)

Early Reds Team News

Reds boss Simon Davey has claimed he will field a full-strength side as The Reds get their 2009-2010 Carling Cup campaign up and running with a fairly local trip to League Two Lincoln City. Newly signed Adam Hammill and fit again Iain Hume could get their first starts of the season. The imminent Emil Hallfredsson will not feature. The deal will not be completed until the winger has played for Iceland on Wednesday. Hugo Colace may be fit but is unlikely to be risked.

Likely Line-Up:

Head to Head.

The last time Barnsley travelled to Sincil Bank for a League Cup tie, they won and got to the Play-Off Final that year. That was on Tuesday 10th August 1999- exactly ten years ago today! The Reds triumphed 4-2 courtesy of goals from Neil Shipperley, Robin Van Der Laan (2) and Nicky Eaden. Those were the days that the early rounds of the League Cup were two legged affairs. So 14 days later they played out a 2-2 draw at Oakwell. The Reds were hauled back on aggregate as the Imps raced into a 2-0 lead but second half strikes from Mike Sheron and Eaden ensured Barnsley's passage. They would go on to eliminate Stockport and Bradford before being thumped 4-0 at Tranmere.

Lincoln and Barnsley have been paired in the League Cup a further two times. They had a two legged affair in the 1979-80 season- Lincoln winning 2-1 at Sincil Bank and The Reds winning 2-1 at Oakwell. Unfortunately the Imps would prevail on penalties. They also met in 1964 at Oakwell with Barnsley winning 2-1, but they were beaten 3-0 at Leyton Orient in the next round.

Barnsley and Lincoln have not met in league competition for 39 years. Last time they were in the same league was in the Fourth Division in 1975-76, with the Imps doing the double over The Reds- winning 2-1 at home and 1-0 away. Lincoln were promoted as Champions that year with an unbeaten home record. They were relegated back to England's bottom division in 1978-79- the year The Reds were promoted from it.

In total The Reds have made 34 trips to Sincil Bank, winning 11 of them, but have lost three of the last four trips.

Lincoln City. Last Season and This:

Lincoln will be disappointed with their 2008-2009 season. Between 2003 and 2007, they reached the Play-Offs every year but were foiled in their quest for promotion. In 2007-2008 they flattered to deceived finishing 15th and last year was only marginally better as they secured a 13th place finish under former Huddersfield manager Peter Jackson. They will be hoping to exit the bottom tier of the Football League for the first time in 11 years in this campaign and started off the right way at the weekend with a 1-0 win over Barnet thanks to a goal from Janos Kovacs.
