Interesting Stats:

Tomorrow is the first meeting between Barnsley and Chesterfield for eight years, each of the last three meetings have ended in draws.

You have to go back a decade for the last victory in this fixture, with a late Antony Kay goal securing a 1-0 win for The Reds at Oakwell in September 2004.

Barnsley have lost just one of their last seven meetings with the Spireites and only two of the last 12.

This will be The Reds first ever trip to the Proact Stadium. They won only seven of their 40 visits to Saltergate but lost only one of the last six.

Goals have been a rarity in this fixture in recent times, there have been just 12 in the last eight, less than two per game.

Barnsley thumped Chesterfield 4-1 in a League Cup tie back in 1997 but in the 13 league clashes since Chesterfield’s 4-1 win at Oakwell in 1971, only two have featured a winner by more than one goal.

Chesterfield won five of their opening ten games to their first season following promotion but are now on a seven match winless run in League One, four of which have ended in defeat.

The Spireites have also failed to score a goal in any of their last four (although a 6-0 victory at Braintree in the FA Cup punctures this.) It is their longest run without a league goal since failing to net in any of their final five games of the 2008-2009 season.

Chesterfield are without a home in three matches since they defeated another South Yorkshire side, Sheffield United. The last time they went four home matches without victory was in September last year, also the last time they were on a three match winless run at the Proact.

On the other side of the coin however Paul Cook’s side have drawn each of their last two league matches 0-0 so coupled with their FA Cup victory have kept three clean sheets in a row.

They have conceded just 10 home league goals this season, only six League One teams have a better record.

The clean sheet they kept in their last home outing however, against Yeovil, is the only one they have managed at the Proact in their last 13 games there in all competitions.

Chesterfield striker Eoin Doyle is the division’s top scorer with 14 goals in 17 League One appearances this season. However the 26 year old scored those in his first 11 games. He has now gone six league games without a goal, all of which the Spireites have failed to win.

Interestingly Chesterfield have not won any game that Doyle has not scored in.

112 years ago Barnsley and Chesterfield were Second Division teams and when these two met at the Spireites old Saltergate ground the hosts were riding high in sixth position after winning five of their opening 10 matches, whilst The Reds under the management of John McCartney were 15th (out of 18) following just one win and four defeats from their first eight games.

The match went true to form as well with Chesterfield enjoying a 3-0 win to lift them up to 5th.

Chesterfield would eventually finish in sixth place whilst Barnsley who won just two of their first 14 games saw a marked improvement including a run of nine wins in 13 and finished in eighth, just three points behind Chesterfield.
