Barnsley could be taken over by a Chinese billionaire in the next couple of weeks! The Daily Mail reported yesterday that the club were in advanced talks with billionaire businessman Chien Lee who is also the majority shareholder at French top-flight side Nice.
Lee made his billions with the hotel chain Plateno Group and investment company NewCity Capital and it is this investment group that is believed to be now in advanced talks with the Oakwell board to secure a full buyout.
It is no secret that Barnsley owner Patrick Cryne is looking to sell the majority of his shares as he unfortunately battles cancer.
Lee is believed to want to add Barnsley FC to his portfolio with the fact the club is run in a healthy state with no debt making it one of the more attractive clubs to invest in. Lee is not thought to be prepared to plough vast millions into the playing squad but would be prepared to fund a push at returning the club to the Premier League for only the second time ever.
When the news story broke late on Friday evening many thought it could just be gossip as there have been rumours of takeovers in the past but firstly on Saturday morning Chien Lee himself started following the club on twitter and then head coach Paul Heckingbottom confirmed talks were ongoing in his post match press conference following a 1-0 defeat at Sheffield United saying:
“There is some truth to it but it’s not my place to talk about it. I’m aware of what’s going on, I’m aware of what I need to be aware of. But my job is to focus on the team.”
