Coca Cola Championship Matchday Nineteen: Barnsley v Ipswich Town

Last updated : 25 November 2006 By Rob Miles (barnsley Boy)

New Care-taker boss Simon Davey, assisted by Ryan Kidd, has four new faces to fit into his squad after Thursday's loan deadline.

New recruits Leon Knight, Grant McCann, Kyel Reid and Ronnie Wallwork should all come into the squad.

Reid and Knight could start due to the departures of former starters Michael McIndoe and Tommy Wright. McCann and Wallwork are likely to make the bench unless Davey decides to rest Togwell and start Wallwork.

Probable Line-Up:

Nick Colgan

Paul Heckingbottom

Antony Kay

Bobby Hassell

Kyel Reid

Brian Howard

Sam Togwell/Ronnie Wallwork

Martin Devaney

Daniel Nardiello

Leon Knight

Today's encounter is the first time the two teams have met since the First Division Play-Off Final at Wembley in 2000 when Ipswich triumphed 4-2 to seal a place in the Premiership.

Craig Hignett put The Reds in front after just 6 minutes but Tony Mowbray, Richard Naylor and Marcus Stewart gave Ipswich a 3-1 lead. A Craig Hignett penalty brought Barnsley back into the match but a last minute Martijn Reuser strike sealed promotion for Ipswich.

That defeat means The Reds have lost their last 3 encounters with Ipswich and 4 of the last 5!

Ipswich did the double over Barnsley during that Play-Off season.

In the Oakwell meeting Ipswich came away 2-0 winners on the 5th February 2000 thanks to goals from Jamie Scowcroft and Marcus Stewart within seconds of each other.

The Reds were 4th after that game, Ipswich 3rd. The two positions both clubs would occupy come the end of the season.

The Portman Road meeting on 30th August 1999 was an even bigger disaster with The Reds hammered 6-1!

Johnson (2), Venus, Naylor and Scowcroft had put Ipswich 5-0 before Sean McClare replied. A last minute Jim Magilton goal put the icing on the cake. Magilton is now Ipswich manager.

That result came just a week after Barnsley had hammered Portsmouth 6-0 and left The Reds 10th with Ipswich top!

From the last meeting at Oakwell, Fabian Wilnis, Richard Naylor (former Barnsley loanee) and Manager Jim Magilton still remain at Ipswich.

Onto 2006-2007 and Ipswich have had a fairly unspectacular season so far under rookie Jim Magilton.

They started off with 3 successive defeats but picked up and now lie in 13th place on the back of a great derby win over Norwich. Ipswich lost their last away game, 1-0 at Burnley.

Barnsley of course go into the game under new stewardship after the week's sacking of Andy Ritchie. The Reds have won just 1 of their last 11 games but that came last time out at Oakwell, beating Leeds United 3-2.

A win for The Reds today could move them as high as 21st and get them out of the relegation zone. A win for Ipswich could move them as high as 10th.
