Early Reds Team News

Lewin Nyatanga is Barnsley's only doubt for today's crunch clash with newly promoted Scunthorpe United after suffering an injury to his rear end whilst on international duty with Wales. This should allow captain Paul Reid to make an instant return to the side after suspension.

Marciano Van Homoet is set to make the squad for the first time after successfully completing a reserve match against Hartlepool after breaking his hand in the summer.

Kayode Odejayi and Istvan Ferenczi have used the international break to recover from minor knocks.

Newest recruit Jamal Campbell-Ryce could make his debut.

Probable Line-Up:

Head to Head

Barnsley fans would love a repeat of the scoreline the last time Scunthorpe visited Oakwell.

In the promotion season of 2005-2006 The Reds routed Scunny 5-2 with goals from Bobby Hassell, Martin Devaney, Marc Richards (all in the first half) Chris Shuker and Paul Hayes.

Paul Hayes will be playing today… but in the claret of Scunthorpe.

BARNSLEY: Flinders, Hassell (Tonge 68), Reid, Burns, Hayes, Howard, Austin (Williams 82), Kay, Shuker, Richards (Jarman 75), Devaney.

SCUNTHORPE UNITED: Evans, Crosby (Baraclough 45), Hinds, Bryne, Beagrie, Butler, Keogh, Williams, Sharp, Till (Taylor 45), MacKenzie.
Subs: Goodwin, Johnson, Musslewhite.

( Of that Barnsley side, Reid, Howard and Devaney could all play today)

Barnsley 5-2 Scunthorpe Report

That victory atoned for the defeat suffered at Glanford Park in the second game of the 05/06 season when despite dominating for large periods The Reds succumbed to a 2-1 defeat.

That season Scunthorpe were again newly promoted after coming up from League Two and their former top scorer Hayes put Barnsley in front before a Crosby penalty and a Taylor strike gave Scunthorpe their first points of the season.

This Season

Scunthorpe have made a flying start to life in the Championship - their first season in the second tier of English football for 44 years!

Yet to win away but 2 wins out of 2 at home have lifted them into fourth in the embryonic Championship table. A feat capped by drawing 1-1 at Charlton and defeating Sheffield United 3-2 at home. Two sides hotly tipped for immediate Premiership returns.

Barnsley on the other hand have had a slow start as 14 new players try to gel. Just 1 win from the opening 4 games leaves them fourth from bottom and in desperate need of 3 points to boost confidence and push up the league.
