Head to Head

Oh dear. That's the only thing that can really be said about Barnsley's recent form against the Sky Blues. Barnsley haven't registered a victory against Coventry since both sides were in the Premier League and of the last six meetings, Coventry have hit four in four of them, including the last three meetings in the Midlands. Indeed Barnsley have won just twice at Coventry in their history. Last season was a real downer as The Reds let in four home and away. A new look Reds side were defeated 4-1 on opening day of 2007-2008 and then were crushed 4-0 at the Ricoh Arena in February 2008. It hasn't got much better this year with Barnsley's first home game again being against Chris Coleman's side with the Blues winning 2-1. The last time Barnsley secured a victory against Coventry was in October 1997 when goals from Ashley Ward and Neil Redfearn secured a 2-0 Premier League win.

This Season

It has been another underachieving season for Coventry. After staying up by just one point last season they were expected to try and push on for promotion this time around. Despite winning their first two games of the season it hasn't materialised, although they haven't been dragged into the relegation scrap like last year. They currently sit 15th and having nothing to play for has seen a dip in form. They have won just one of their last 10 matches, six of those being defeats. Ironically their last three games have been against teams around Barnsley in the table and they lost 4-0 at Plymouth, drew 0-0 with Charlton and then at the weekend lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest.

Barnsley were handed a slight lifeline with a surprising 0-0 draw at promotion chasing Reading on Saturday, but they really do need to beat bogey side Coventry to keep matters in their own hands, with a match against champions-elect Wolves coming up on Saturday. A win tomorrow will put them four points clear of third from bottom Norwich with just two games remaining.
