Coca-Cola Championship Matchday Six: Barnsley v Cardiff City

Last updated : 16 September 2008 By Rob Miles (barnsley Boy)

Reds boss Simon Davey is still without on loan striker Maceo Rigters for tonight's crucial Championship clash with Cardiff. The Dutch striker is still nursing a hamstring injury but should be fit for Saturday's long trip to Southampton. Tonight is also likely to come too early for Anderson De Silva although he could be a surprise inclusion on the bench. Gary Teale has returned to Derby County but Jamal Campbell-Ryce is fit to make his first start of the season.

Head to Head

Cardiff are not really a team that The Reds want to facing on such a wretched run as Barnsley haven't beaten the Bluebirds in the last six meetings and have only picked up 11 victories in 37 meetings overall. The two sides met three times last season without joy although they did draw 1-1 at Oakwell. Cardiff defeating The Reds 3-0 at Ninian Park and more famously, 1-0 at Wembley in the FA Cup Semi-Finals.

This Season:

Despite Cardiff being 8th and Barnsley 22nd both sides only have one win to their names this season.

Whilst Barnsley have won one and lost four, Cardiff are the draw specialists with four ties from their opening five games. The Bluebirds are winless since the opening day but along with Wolves, Birmingham, Preston and Bristol City they remain undefeated.

Barnsley are in desperate need of a win after seeing their 27 year stretch without defeat at Blackpool ended at the weekend. In fact The Reds have tasted victory just seven times in the last 31 league outings!
