Head to Head

Barnsley head into tomorrow's encounter looking for their first "double" of the season and the omens look good having not lost to Southampton at Oakwell in a league match since 1953. Granted there have only been three meetings in the intervening years but you have to look for good omens!

The two sides have spent many years in different divisions and in the two recent meetings The Reds have gathered four points.

Last season saw an entertaining 2-2 draw. Marc Richards fired The Reds in front right on half time but Grzegorz Rasiak brought Southampton level straight after the restart. A Paul Hayes penalty fired Barnsley back in front on 71 but Rasiak scored from the spot three minutes later to earn a share of the spoils.

You have to go back to the Premiership season for the next home meeting. And what a cracker too! Southampton becoming one of Barnsley's 10 victims that season after a 4-3 thriller.

Ashley Ward put The Reds in front after 17 minutes before Egil Ostenstad levelled the scores on 25. Scott Jones made it 2-1 on 32 but again Southampton came back, Matt Le Tissier making it 2-2 on 41.

It was 3-2 within a minute courtesy of Jan Aage Fjortoft and a Neil Redfearn penalty on 57 put Barnsley in control. Le Tissier pulled it back to 4-3 on 71 to ensure a nervy last 20 minutes.

Last season Stoke followed Southampton at Oakwell, this season it's the opposite.

Barnsley will be hoping to follow up an excellent result at the St Mary's Stadium earlier in the season.

Two superb Grant McCann free kicks had put The Reds 2-0 in front but Marek Saganowski and a last gasp Inigo Idiakez strike looked to have rescued a point. With virtually the last game of the game however Martin Devaney won it for The Reds. Coming back on 22nd September it is still Barnsley's only away win this season.

Southampton: Davis ,Wright (Idiakez ,81 ) ,Thomas ,Dailly ,Vignal ,Hammill ,Viafara ,Safri ,Surman ,Saganowski (Rasiak ,69 ) ,Wright-Phillips (John ,46)

It certainly made up for last season's visit when The Reds were crushed 5-2. Danny Nardiello has given The Reds an early lead but he would be later sent off. Andrew Surman made it 1-1 and Kenwyne Jones put Southampton in front. Istvan Ferenczi notched his first Barnsley goal to make it 2-2 on 68mintues before The Reds simply collapsed. Surman completed a hat-trick, Jones claimed a brace and Barnsley looked red hot for relegation!

This Season

Southampton, burdened by financial problems have seen an expected promotion push falter. Beaten in the Play-Off Semis last season by Derby on penalties, they were expected to go for the automatics. Unfortunately manager George Burley has had his hands tied and seen key players such as Kenwyne Jones (scorer of 16 goals last season) sold to Sunderland for £6m

They have improved in recent weeks however, and have lost just one of their last six games to be only behind The Reds on goal difference.

They earned a credible 1-1 draw at Colchester on Boxing Day but were beaten 1-0 at home by struggling Preston last weekend.

Barnsley meanwhile will look to make it 12 home games without defeat. Denied victory by a controversial penalty decision on Boxing Day they will hope to claim their first league "double" of the season.
