Kane Hemmings’ Barnsley debut is threatening to be held up further as his former club Cowdenbeath have turned to the Scottish Football Association to claim the compensation they believe they are owed.
The 22 year old who was the Scottish Championship’s second highest scorer last season, netting 24 goals in 39 games moved to Oakwell this summer for what Barnsley claimed was on a free transfer.
Cowdenbeath however claim that as the former Rangers youngster is under the age of 23 they are due a compensation fee.
The Reds current reasoning as to why Hemmings is yet to make his debut is that he is suffering from an ankle injury which sidelined him throughout pre-season and they are adamant a FIFA directive states that a club must tell an out of contract player that they wish to retain him 60 days before his deal runs out.
The “Blue Brazil” side’s chief executive Alex Anderson has responded saying:
“Barnsley are saying that we are not entitled to compensation, quoting a FIFA rule that a player who is going to be out of contract has to be informed 60 days prior to the end of the season that his club wishes to retain him.
“We complied with the SFA and SPFL instruction, in relation to the under-23 rule, that the notice period involved has to be within 30 days.”
Barnsley have refused to comment publicly to the media but Cowdenbeath have now referred the matter to the SFA.
