Cryne Ups The Budget

Barnsley owner Patrick Cryne has revealed boss Simon Davey will have a BIGGER transfer budget than last season to try and make The Reds a more formidable Championship force in 2008-2009.

Cryne has targeted a top half finish for the new season and after giving Davey just over £1m to spend last summer has upped that for this year.

He told the Yorkshire Evening Post:

"He will have significant funding behind him. It's not extravagant in the sense of Premiership teams, or the funds available to those teams with parachute payments.

"But we recognise that we need to be competitive in relation to the targets we have set so the manager will have significant funding. We can't recruit the Ronaldos, but we can recruit people to perform creditably and we have the funds to do that.

"Now it's up to Simon whom he sees as playing for us."

Cryne has also revealed there have been NO offers for captain Brian Howard.

Howard whose contract runs out next summer has been linked with a host of Premier League and Championship clubs after his goal-scoring exploits last season and is rated at about £2m. Cryne though says any interest has not been made firm

."Despite the newspaper talk we have had no discussions with Brian or his agent or with any team that might want him. At this point there is more speculation than substance.

"His contract is up at the end of next season and we've not spoken with, or been asked anything by, his agent. I would very much like to keep Brian and I don't see why we shouldn't."

Meanwhile The Reds have added another pre-season friendly to thier schedule. They will travel to Huish Park on Saturday 19th July 2008 at 3pm to face League One Yeovil.
