Cup Draw Doesn't Make Good Reading

Barnsley's hopes of a cup run look precarious after they were handed an away tie at Championship rivals Reading in the Second Round.

Due to Carling Cup ties being subject to the seeding structure,
Barnsley (unseeded) could only play a team from the Championship or Premier League and they were duly sent to seeded Reading.

It means the two sides will meet twice in the space of one week. The cup tie is to be played in the week commencing Monday 24th August (most likely on Tuesday 25th August) and then The Royals visit Oakwell in the league on the Saturday.

Barnsley and Reading have met once before in the League Cup- a two legged Second Round affair in the 1998-1999 season, when Barnsley were fresh from Premier League relegation and Reading were in Division Two (League One).

The first leg at Oakwell ended in a resounding 3-0 win for The Reds with Darren Barnard and Jan-Aage Fjortoft (2) getting the goals

The furthest Reading have ventured in the League Cup is to the Quarter-Final stage which they have done on two occasions- 1995-1996 where they lost 2-1 to Leeds and 1997-98 when they lost 1-0 to Middlesbrough.

They advanced to the Second Round this season by thumping League new boys Burton Albion 5-1
