Barnsley are set to make an ambitious New Year move for Port Vale striker Tom Pope.

The 29 year old has hit 54 goals in 154 appearances so far at Vale Park, including seven this season.

This has attracted the interest of Reds boss Danny Wilson who revealed to BBC Radio Sheffield this morning that he has been tracking the former Crewe and Rotherham front man and could try and entice him to South Yorkshire when the transfer window reopens in January.

Wilson said:

“Yes, he (Pope) was one we enquired about, but nothing will happen until January. Whether it happens with us or not we will have to wait and see but he was certainly one we enquired about.”

Pope netted in each of his first four games of the 2014-2015 season before enduring a nine game drought. He ended this by netting a brace in Vale’s 3-2 Johnstones Paint Trophy defeat at Preston on Tuesday.

Meanwhile Wilson also confirmed today that Fulham striker Marcello Trotta will not be moving to Oakwell on loan.

The Reds signed winger Ryan Williams from the Craven Cottage outfit last Thursday and were also set to bring in 22 year old Italian striker Trotta but it was announced today that he has turned down a move to League One and could not be set to secure a short term move to a Championship outfit.
